I am against both- unless they are medically (for their health) necessary. Snipping and cutting this and that for aesthetics is disturbing- on humans and dogs.

Definitely for it. I used to think it was all personal choice but after seeing dogs with the medical problems later in life going through surgeries and amputations vs a couple little snips I think it should just be done.

And for whoever asked-cockers ears are to vascular to crop. Instead they do what one of my vets wanted to do to my dobe and basically seal up the ear making it useless but it doesn't cause them pain anymore. Something they do do for them also is tie up their ears a couple hours a day if its an infection from moisture being trapped in the ear.

I am for both. Its been apart of the breed standard for many many years. Its tradition. Why change it? We put our baby boys through circumcision, so whats the difference? I can see why some people are against ear cropping, because its done at a later age and takes longer to heal, but what I really dont get is why people are so against docking.

IMO, this is abuse:

And this is not.

This topic will never be solved on an internet message board, opinions are too "hot" on both sides. That's all I'm going to say on the subject, you all may hash and rehash the issue over and over again if you wish. But I'll stay out of it.
Agreed. By the way, who are the pups in the pic?

I am glad Frito has started to improve. I honestly wonder how people can treat a dog like that.

I personally think the comparison of spay/neuter to crop/dock is a valid one. Both are surgical procedures, and the former is more invasive than the latter. Both have pre-concieved notions and misconceptions attached to them. Frequently the same people who will tell you how cruel cosmetic surgery is will also tell you that in order to be responsible, you have to subject your dog to neutering. They are all surgeries which should be elective, but we are frequently bullied into making the most socially-acceptable decisions regarding them.

I pretty much feel like we are brainwashed to believe certain things. My dog is un-cropped and spayed. (Her dewclaws were removed by the breeder.) I have my reasons for wanting to keep her ears intact -- not touching on tail since APBTs are not a docked breed -- but I was so pressured into believing that it is evil to leave your dog intact that I was practically chomping at the bit to spay. 3 years later, I regret it. I may have been able to finish her, and would have had my UKC Superdog by now. But the neuter police are happy; I made the most socially-acceptable decision. Whether I'm happy or not makes little difference. Whether a spay was the best thing for Loki is a moot point by now.

The point is, we let people tell us what is acceptable and what is not, rather than thinking for ourselves. Some people will spout a HSUS or PeTA tagline without even understanding the true meaning behind it. And others are just too happy to turn over little bits and pieces of what should be a dog owner's right to choose for themselves, they don't even see the whole picture.

Blue, yes COs have floppy ears if left natural

Ravennr, its not that erect ears DONT get ripped up or are easier or harder to rip up but its harder for an opponent to grab them. Floppy ears, well, flop around and the dog has little or not control to where they are. No ears or very little ears (working pit bull crop) anr near impossible to grab (obviously) and erect ears the dogs have full control over where they are. HAve you ever seen an erect-earred dog engage? They lay their ears flat against their head making them a lot harder to grab than if they were flopping all over.

Sizzle, poor Frito! Good post though! a picture truly is worth 1000 words! Niether cropped pups in the second photo look to be in pain or discomfort from the tape on their ears.

CAOGirl, I had no idea Dublin was getting that strict! wow! I know where I'm never moving to...

Wimble Woof, if you read the paragraph you quoted you would see I already explained why some floppy-earred dogs shouldnt be cropped ;)

Joce, thanks for explaining the Cockers and the plugging of the ears! :D

Bahamutt, great post and I agree because I went through the same thing with OC! Even my breeder kicks herself for pushing him being neutered as he has grown up to be exactly what she has been striving to achieve in her breeding program.

I caught it when I quoted it.;) However I was more or less just babbling about how the tables "could" be turned on the ones like me who would prefer it not be done. Basically debating with myself :lol-sign:
