We have 3 orandas. They have grown a LOT since I bought them and they are huge. They are in a large tank, but we may need an even bigger one before long! Little buggers.

Two of them matured quickly and developed breeding stars on their gills and pectoral fins. The other one is just developing breeding stars now.

The largest fish has now developed two large growths on both pectoral fins where the breeding stars where/are. The fish is overall healthy, water is good, eat well, no marks, rips, tears etc etc etc etc. They are symmetrical, same place on each fin. No other lumps anywhere, scales all healthy.

Is it normal for the breeding stars to develop into growths or is this something we should be concerned about - I can't find anything through google.

The second fish looks like it's are also going to end up the same. I will try and get some pics tomorrow.

Well, these breeding stars or....nuptical tubercles do get to be more like bumps or pimples. Your fish look healthy...the dorsal fins are held upright etc. If they don't grow out of control or don't look gross, it's probably not cancer or anything, which they can get in that area. My guess is that it's a normal tubercle.

I've never seen them develop into lumps before... They must be very horny fish :D lol I don't question their general health, they're doing great and are about the size of tennis balls! They were grape size when I got them... Already had one tank upgrade, going to take over the whole room soon! We do spoil our pets...
