Totally unrelated but I cannot pronounce bagel correctly and I can't figure out what i do incorrectly lol
A coworker of mine (also a college friend, so he'd known me a while) would always repeat the word "bagel" after me every time I ever said it. I always thought it was because "bagel" is just kind of a funny word to say. It went on for years. One day, he finally said to me, "WHY do you keep saying it that way??? I have been correcting you for YEARS NOW." And I was like, "WHAT???"

We went back and forth saying "bagel" at each other that entire day at work. I still can't hear the difference between when I say it and when he says it.

ETA:
Long story short, I'm kind of excited that I'm not the only one with this problem. LOL

Also... I should probably contribute to the original topic. LOL!

I'm not really wild for off-the-wall baby names, either. Not really opposed, but most of them just aren't my cup of tea in terms of personal tastes.

Even the uncommon names I do like... are still not all that uncommon. LOL! Most of them are actually just older names that have gone out of favor in recent generations. A lot of those types of names are coming back into trend, though. For instance: Eleanor, Sylvia, Wyatt, etc.

Random question: Anybody know of a Marie as a first name? I know a ton of people with Marie as a middle name, but I can only recall meeting one actual first-name Marie. Plenty of people named Maria, but only one Marie. Weird.

Not in NA, but I think it's pretty popular in Europe. One site has it listed in the top 10 for Belgium and Austria, and still top 50 for other European countries.

Yes, my boss's name is Marie and so is my cousin's.

Also, that was the best pronunciation clip ever. I seriously could not wrap my head around the fact that they are supposed to sound different and then once I heard you say it, I finally understood! I blame my Minnesotan accent. :rofl1:

I really like some of the uncommon names listed here but sometimes the longer/crazier ones just seem like the parents are trying WAY to hard to make sure their child is an individual.

And as someone who has to deal with writing out names all day I'm just going to give a fair warning if your name is crazy/not common and you get pissy just because I had to ask you how to spell it I'm going to listen to you, write down the correct name on paper so when you ask me to spell it back I have it and then spell it wrong on purpose on your order.

Alright, I officially give up. I listened to Jessie's clip, and they still sound EXACTLY THE SAME to me! Too funny.
Me too! Hahahaha.

My best friends name is Kerri. And I just... say it like Carrie, so does she. I don't really hear a difference much. I mean, I do hear you in the clip, pronouncing the 'e' more than the 'a'... but I think I think it takes too much effort for me to do that, and I would feel funny and always trying to worry about whether the 'e' is more prominent or an 'a'.

Fwiw, I say divorce funny and vacation according to every one, but I NEVER hear it. I feel like I'm saying it right but apparently I'm not :p But now that I know I say those words weird, I make a point to really try hard when saying them aloud, which in turn probably makes them sound stupider.

As far as the topic of thread... I, too, like names maybe a bit more unique, not super common but not super weird either. A lot of these celebs names I think are just crazy.

These two little girls in the day care I work are from Spain, so pretty too, and named Clara and Adella. I love both of those names and I always have trouble finding girl names! Then there's this one family with a Matteus, Giovanni (Gio), Luka, and.... something else. I don't personally really like Matteus, but Gio is kind of neat, but the name doesn't really fit the kid lol.

Kind of funny, but I haven't thought much about human baby names, because I will 99.9% likely have another dog before a kid, LoL, so dog names are my to-do list but most of my boy dog names I would like for a human boy too. Jonah has always been a fav, Lincoln, Parker, Ryder, Tanner, etc.
