I have this argument with my husband all the time too. He insists that Lauren is pronounced "Lah-ren" instead of "Lore-en".
For some reason this always happens to me! No one gets my name right.

"what's your name?"

"lauren :)"

"nice to meet you Laura/Laurie/etc"

"...:)"
Though the server in Panera spelt my name wrong. He spelt it Lora...
Haha all three of these. I get called Laura so often. And people spell it 'Loren' more often than not.

I also have had people get really intense about 'Do you pronounce your name 'Lah-ren' or 'Lor-en?' Honestly, people call me either and I respond to either. I pronounce 'Lauren' and 'Loren' differently though.

7th grade there were 5 Laurens in my science class.

Both my first and middle name are pretty popular, but I don't really mind and they don't get messed up (that I can remember anyways).

Nicole Marie

However, Nikki, which is what I go by gets messed up at times. Not the pronunciation really, but the spelling of it. It doesn't really bother me though.

Random question: Anybody know of a Marie as a first name? I know a ton of people with Marie as a middle name, but I can only recall meeting one actual first-name Marie. Plenty of people named Maria, but only one Marie. Weird.
My Granny's first name was Marie :)

This thread is cracking me up.

I'm not too fond of overly original names. I do love 'river' for a girl though (must be a Firefly thing).

I know a Kerrie. I like it too, but I'm sure people spell it 'Carrie' all the time. And it's definitely 'keh-ree'.

I never get why people name their kids Christopher, Matthew, Alexandra, etc. but 99% of the time call them Chris, Matt, and Alex.

My grandma's name was Marie too!

My husband's grandma's name is Rosalin, but she goes by her middle name. I think the name is really pretty.

At work, my co-workers just call me "Mary, Kerry, Terri, Kelly" because for whatever reason I must say it sloppily so no one ever gets it right on the phone.

I love my name. I don't know how common it is, but I've only met like 3 others, and only 1 that spelled it with a K.

Oh, and my name is Katherine. I have so many nicknames though, it's hilarious. I really don't mind people asking to spell my name, or if they misspell it. My last name is misspelled all the time. All. The. Time. So I'm used to it. My grandma spells it with a C.

I do both, Chris and Christopher. It's just easier and we like both. I'd just think it would be weird to have a kid called Chris, personally.

For our daughter, it's a compromise I guess. We both love her full name and really wanted it, but we like our short name too, so we use that one because it's easier.

My teacher 5th - 8th called my Lah-ra - I think that was just her Rhode Island accent though..

My maternal grandmother's name was Constance, nick name, Connie. Actually, there were/are 3 family members with that name. It's not really unusual, just don't hear it much these days. My paternal grandmother's name was Bertha. She was German...not really crazy about that name, was crazy about her though. I do like the name, Constance. My mom's name is Alice. I love that. Maybe that will make a come back.

Another name I think is so cute is ivy. So, what do you think about all that?

My brother is named Giovanni..but he used to eat EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING as a child. And at the time.. there was this commercial for cereal where the parents introduced this new cereal and there are a bunch of kids at the breakfast table that didn't know what to make of it, so they are all like "GIVE IT TO MIKE! MIKE WILL EAT IT! HE EATS ANYTHING! " and there is a montage of this "kid" named Mike eating all of it and the kids chanting MIKE! MIKE! MIKE!

...well.. even though my mom put in EVERY EFFORT to stop people from calling him "Gio".. he got the nickname Mike lol

and it stuck. Now A LOT of people call him that..even at his work.

My poor mother lol she wanted an uncommonly named child.. ended up with a kid everyone calls Mike.

Since we have a Hyia and a Zoen...not pronounced Zoon which is Dutch, I have gotten use to made up names. Hyia really likes her name, and apparently so do other people. My grandson Jory will always know he got to name his Brother, he came up with that one all on his own, made it up. I like it too.

I shorten everyone's name unless they tell me they don't like to be called that. I know a Ashley, and its so frikken hard to not call her Ash, especially since we play volleyball and basketball together, so its shorter and quicker to get her attention.

I even shorten my sister's name Betsy, to Bets. And I have a billion nicknames it seems like. Kat, Kit-Kat, Kitty Kat, K, Catherine, Kathy, Katrina, Meow, Tree ( :p ) Kathium, Kaff... Katty

My name is Dorothy, and I love it. I'm the only person in my age group I've ever met with the name, but it's common enough that everyone knows how to pronounce it (ish, in our area they say it dorth-ee, when really there's a middle 'o' sound too).

My sister's name is Mary, and that's the same way; unusual for her age group, but well known.

How do you pronounce Hyia's name? I've wanted to ask, as I'm sure it's not how I'm saying it in my head:p
