It's taken me the better part of a year to actually get hooked on FB. So what happens? Last night when I logged in, I get a promt asking for a phone number to verify that I'm an actual person. Hubby & I hemmed and hawed over that for about an hour, but there was no way to log on without doing it. So, hubby typed in our land line number. Only to get a box that said something to the effect of they're really busy, and it's going to take awhile to get the code to me that I need to log on with. Now, mind you, that was well after 9PM eastern time last night (closer to 10:30). So, what happens this morning? THE SAME DANG THING!! Evidently they really want a cell number, but they ain't getting mine.

You should be able to avoid giving that, I've never given my phone number out!

Google does the same thing on occasion. There should be somewhere on the page that says skip (it's really tiny). It's not mandatory but can be helpful if someone hacks your account or what have you.

Yea that comes up on Yahoo mail every once in awhile. I just decline to provide it. I've never seen it on FB, though.

facebook asks new users to verify their account with a cell number. It's not a scam..and it's pretty normal.

You don't HAVE to do it. It is necessary so you can use some features (like changing your URL, timeline etc...)

    https://www.facebook.com/help/verify

It's so that people stay real and don't start making 2589728957328951 accounts.

I have mine verified.. it's not that big of a deal. You get a text message with a code and fill it in. and they are very specific that the info is never shared, used etc.. and I've never had a problem.

Yeah hotmail has asked me to do that, and it hasn't been a problem. Never gotten any spam or anything.

I'll take a look again, but I didn't see anything to let me skip it. I even clicked the "Continue" button, but it wouldn't go further because I didn't verify my account. Haven't had Google, Hotmail or Yahoo require a phone number.

Hubby thought of that this morning and checked it out while I was at a Rally seminar. He said everything is OK.

It's not a new account, tho. I'm fussy about who I give my cell number to. As it is, it p*sses me off that Verizon sends me text messages about upgrading my phone, and they're my carrier. Thanks for the link! I'll check it out.

ETA- I saw that page last night. It's contridictory (sp?). When I typed in our phone number, it gave the option to receive a phone call or a text. And the answer about why you can't use a landline is ridiculous. Besides the fact that I don't want to give them my phone number- believe it or not, not everybody has a cell phone, or can receive texts. FB better get their act together.

Yea, about two months ago I wouldn't have been able to verify. I didn't have a cell.

It asks me for my number every now and then. You don't have to give it to them. I haven't, and Facebook still works fine for me.

You shouldn't be. You should be able to click on the top bar and it will redirect you away from the page.

It asks me occasionally and gives me the option to say no thanks.

This is the page that comes up after I log in. I clicked on "Facebook" on the top, and nothing happened.

    https://www.facebook.com/checkpoint/

When I click on "Continue", this is what I get:
    https://www.facebook.com/checkpoint/

I've done a lot of Googling of this. Some people had luck using a "disposable"/pay as you go type of cell phone, but others haven't. That's the only way "around" this that I've been able to find. And, honestly, we don't have the money to go that route (hubby's been unemployed for 3 years).

Can you take a screenshot? I can't view that checkpoint page... when I click the link it just takes me to my feed page.
