Excuse me? Apparently I'm very selfish and don't love dogs.

Tonight my neighbor came over to ask me to take care of her dogs while she went to the lake. (No problem there, I adore her dogs.)
Then she asked to meet Fable. She asked me where I got her and of course I rambled on and on about my little girl and finding her. I mentioned how I had always wanted a GSD and was over the hills happy to find one in a shelter.

THEN she started ranting uncontrollably, telling me how selfish it was to choose a dog at the shelter for being purebred and that's why there are too many mutts dying and that I was just another one of the purebred lovers, not a dog lover. Oh, and how she did a good thing by getting her mix at a pet store because people like me are too selfish to want to pay over a certain amount of money for a mutt and the poor thing would have sat there forever.

First of all, WTH do you say to that?
Second, she has a purebred Rottweiler, one she bought from someone shifty who met her in a Walmart parking lot to give her the dog.
Third, she used to BREED Rottweilers, aka OMG PUREBREDS!
Fourth, I adopted a dog from a shelter. The fact that she was highly desirable as a purebred puppy doesn't take away from the fact that she made room for another dog by coming home with me.
Fifth- Does she not remember any of her life- as only having one mix in about 30 years of dog ownership? Did she not understand what a hypocrite she's being? And most importantly, is she smoking crack?
Sixth, I didn't adopt Fable just because her breed or because she was purebred. There was a lot more to it than that.

So. . .that was my very odd night. I better leave the forum since I don't give a rat's ass about dogs.

Bleh. I hate when people are so obviously hypocritical. Maybe she was projecting her own guilt onto you to try to make herself feel better?

Regardless, you know you did a good thing getting Fable. And Fable knows she's got a good thing going :)

"Well, since I'm such a terrible monster you probably don't want me taking care of your dogs. Good night!" *show to door*

At best, it will be like hitting "restart" as she backpedals and you can have an actual, logical discussion about it if you like. At worst, she's flustered but you're no worse off then you were before except she's probably not going to bring it up to you again.

That's like if you rescued someone from a burning building, or grabbed someone from being hit by a bus, and someone said "you didn't save the RIGHT person". It's ridiculous. Why can't someone get a purebred from a rescue? They're just as in need of a home as any other dog, and plenty of them die daily in shelters.

People are just ignorant. They hear something and don't actually THINK about what really makes sense, and then shove it on other people. I know I've said this before on here but the owner of the grooming place we take Violet has told us TWICE that Violet is unhappy because she is an inside dog. Wtf? She has access to our fenced backyard, and anytime she wants out, she is let out. She WANTS to be inside most of the time. But the lady insists that "dogs like that" are meant to be outside, and she must be miserable. Lmao. She says this as her lab is kenneled in the back room, crying. People just say things. Don't take it to heart. You SAVED Fable. You did an amazing thing.

Geez, I probably would have been flabbergasted, too (and not come up with a really good retort until later), although I've been told I DON'T have a poker face and people can clearly see what I'm thinking. Probably would have looked at her like she had two heads and not a brain between them...

I am curious, though - did she still expect you to come over and watch her dogs after chewing you out? That would take some chutzpah...

Sounds like she wasn't thinking very clearly. Crack very well may have been involved.

It's a bit like when people tell others they're a terrible person for adopting a puppy and not an older dog. Really? Either way, you're saving a life. Might as well get something you're going to be happy working with.

I'd try not to let it bother you. I've had (multiple) people in public gush over Elsie and then ask, "Where did you rescue her?" When I said, "Oh, no I didn't--I bought her. From a breeder," they literally stood up, turned around, and walked away without another word.

Sometimes other people really care deeply about where you got your dog/how old you got your dog/what breed(s) your dog is, when honestly, it's not really their problem.

I've had people talk smack about Saga's ears and the fact that she is a purebred. AFTER they know she was a pound puppy. "Cropping is such a horrible thing, I can't believe you would support that by having that dog." A) I wasn't the one that cropped her ears. b) I don't actually have anything against cropping. C) Adopting her made room for another dog. I have been called a snob because my rescue dog is a purebred. Apparently, it isn't REALLY rescue unless you are saving some unidentifiable mutt with only half of one leg left.

    People are just stupid.

LOL, yes, I'm pretty sure I looked much like this:

I assume she still wants me to take care of her dogs. She left all huffy without talking about her dogs again. When I said yes she said she was very grateful because she doesn't think anyone else will watch them for her. I don't want to to do her any favors, but if she leaves assuming I'm taking care of her dogs I cant leave them without food and water. Or maybe I should just feed the Rottweiler and let the mutt starve. That's what I do, right? :p

She is a strange one. This isn't the first time she went to all sweet to trying to bite my head off in .0000561 seconds. I have to say this was the most confusing time, though.

I had zero retorts in my head. There's hypocrisy, and then apparently as I learned last night there's the kind of hypocrisy where the person has her head upside down and the crack is talking. o.0

Assuming this was a semi-rational rant and anything she said made sense, I don't understand why when you have a purebred you're a snob. If I have a purebred it's because I love the breed itself, not because I like to skip from purebred to purebred regardless of breed.
Millie is my absolute heart dog- and a mix, you know, the dogs I hate. She goes everywhere with me and batshit crazy woman knows it. Or did she forget I've had Millie for 10 years? I guess so. It's awfully hard to talk to someone who isn't making any sense.

LOL! The only reason I tried at all was to defend myself, but then again, from what? I didn't do anything she hasn't done (besides adopt a dog from a shelter). And no, I didn't bring that up because I feel I should be praised for adopting. This is the first time I actually ever even got a dog from a shelter. Other people spend their lives adopting/fostering dogs that are on the euth list and truly do save their lives. But I definitely had a lot to say about it when I was told I adopted the wrong dog for very selfish reasons. All jokes about crack aside, I seriously think she was high. I didn't notice until her started bulging with anger, lol, but they were awfully red and glassy.

What a weird thing to go on about! I mean, you still are adopting a dog out of a shelter regardless of any other wonky information she is trying to throw in there. I say good on you, if you provide good healthy homes for your dogs... I already love you for it :D

Some people don't have a brain.

I got told recently that I am clearly not an animal lover because I look a breeders websites sometimes. Yeah, the three rescue dogs at my feet may disagree with you there :p

I agree with the crackhead theory!!! WTF? -___-

Sometimes, I feel like desperately uneducated, uninformed people will just go on a rant & make no sense simply because they want to SOUND smart and have something to rant about. It has nothing to do with you, it's just her trying to feel morally superior. I bet she walked away from that thinking she taught you a valuable lesson! LOL. I would talk to her and straighten her out, as it's important that you stand up for yourself, and it sounds like she needs to hear some realness. Let her know that YOU adopted your dogs, saved their lives from certain death. SHE bought her dogs, supported bad breeders, and brought even more badly bred dogs into the world! SHE has no right to lecture you. Tell her you'd be happy to watch her dogs as long as she doesn't try that again, and you love dogs regardless of their breed or where they came from - you're just particular about what dogs you want to own for life!

I was telling some one I don't know what Fozzie is, how he's a mutt from a rescue, and they went on this longlonglong rant about how "mutts are the best! they are the healthiest! they live the longest! that's why I have a Puggle! you're a racist if you only want a purebred!" And I said I disagree. I love my mutt & it's great to rescue a mutt if you just want a loving pet... but purebreds exist for a reason, because they produce consistently, you know what you're getting, and a well-bred purebred is going to be extremely healthy. And I'm getting a purebred from an amazing breeder for my next dog. They glared at me like I was a traitor/racist and walked off. Oh well.

The way I look at it: A rescue dog is a rescue dog period! Whether it is purebred or a mixed breed, it makes no difference. Adopting one or the other is still saving a life, providing the dog with a good home and freeing up space for another dog to have the same chance.

Sometime people just need to nitpick at what others have done in order to justify to themselves that what they have done is the "right thing", regardless if it is or isn't.
