Bean hiked his leg (appropriately- I was walking him to potty) in front of my agility instructor tonight. Her eyes got huge. She asked how old he is- I said, five and a half months, but he's been lifting his leg since he came home as a tiny puppy.

She was momentarily speechless.

I know it's unusual, and I admit I'm kind of expecting him to start, like, humping everything he sees or marking everything, and so far he hasn't.

Anybody else had such an early leg-lifter? How did he turn out?

(I really wish I'd taken pictures of him lifting his leg when he was tiny, but I never managed to actually take any.)

Zander, Dante, and Goose all started lifting their legs round 7-8 months, I believe. Goose may have started closer to 5-6 months.

Fosters were a little different. Some of the boys came to us lifting legs, others didn't lift legs until they saw our boys do it, despite that they were anywhere from 1 year to 4 years old.

He is so darn cute!

I've never had a male puppy and none of my girls are leg-lifters really so no help there. Cookie has done the post-poop grass kicking thing since I met her though, at ~12-13 weeks. Kinda surprised me lol

Milo started at 5 months I think? Which was hilarious, because his legs were about 3 inches tall at that time.

I kept 2 male Basenji puppies from a litter 3 years ago. One of the boys started lifting his leg at 5 months which is extremely unusual in the breed. His brother, the dominant male, didn't start lifting his leg regularly until he was 2 years old. He started to become same-sex aggressive about that time. *sighs*

My sister recently obtained a tiny 4 month old Yorkie mix. The puppy was already lifting his leg when she brought him home.

IIRC, Blaze was young. He's still fine. No crazy humping. He does mark way more than I care for, but a good amount of watching will usually avoid any huge mishaps. lol

I always recall Bandit being a leg lifter to pee. He came to live with me at 5 months old but he had been doing it before then too.

Bandit doesnt hump. He never did even when 3, intact an d around females in heat. He stopped marking on things and hasnt since he was 2.5 that arent outside like trees or bushes. He was neutered at 3 years old.

Wesley still squats :( He isn't very manly. Its ok though, Riot, Faith and Sadie all lift their leg to pee. They are man enough to make up for the boys.

My sister's 9 month old male Ridgeback still squats. WTF? Soooo silly.

I think its just a "I can pee higher than you" thing. If he's not humping a lot I wouldn't really care.

Saxon started lifting his leg at about 9 or 10 months. He is now 2 and still squats on flat ground but lifts his leg on trees and poles.

Dash has been lifting his leg since he was eight weeks old! I neutered him at about a year old and he's a bit dominant and kind of a jerk when he meets new dogs but it's in that annoying 'I don't know anything about personal bubbles and I'm a Boxer' kind of way. He was so sick when he was little that we waited until he was older to vaccinate him so he didn't meet a lot of new dogs when he was a puppy. He's very appropriate with my dogs and was super respectful of Big B and learned a lot from him.

Pretty sure Auggie was leg-lifting when he came home too and still does. Payton wasn't, and just about the only time he leg lifts at all is when he's marking over where another dog has peed (stupid intact male dog.) Otherwise he just squats to pee. I wish he would hike his leg. PEE LIKE A BOY, PAYTON. Every once in a while he will hike a leg for a normal pee and I'm like "OH I AM SO PROUD" and then he goes back to peeing like a girl. Sigh.

The girls are always peeing on each other trying to mark the same thing. Super awkward! And Lily is engaged in an ongoing pissing contest with my parent's male BC. Pretty sure Will came out of the womb lifting his leg! LOL

I had actually never met a male dog that squatted until I spent time with my friend/old roommates Lab/RR mix.

Btw we do not get enough devil puppy pics. He is CUTE!!!!
