Ok after looking at Dizzy's post I definetely prefer Dobes docked and cropped. They just don't look like Dobermans to me with the hound ears and thin tail.

Mainly I care more about tails than ears. Rotties, Aussies, and Boxers all look better imo when their tails are docked.

I like Great Danes and Dobermans with cropped ears but it has to be a good job like Sizzles dogs. I hate badly cropped ears.

Agree. I like most breeds that are traditionally docked to be docked. Cropping, I like mainly on danes and dobes. I think boxers and pitties look much better with natural ears.

Thanks for those dobie pics, dizzy. Dang, they dont look half bad WITH tails. :yikes:

I gotta say that their ears do make them look somewhat like a dachshund head. Not that its bad, but I still prefer the cropped look, especially if I want a guardian dog to look more intimidating to criminals.

I think one of those boxers is a bull mastiff. But wow, I wouldnt mind having a boxer with a tail. I am starting to prefer the look.

With shorthaired breeds like dobes, rotties, and weims I much prefer the way they look when they are docked. But I don't like cropped ears in ANY breed. I prefer natural ears. It may also be the process I don't like.

As for longhaired (Like Aussies and poodles) I just think they look better with tails. They have nice tails. I always wonder what Bjorn's tail would look like.

And a website that goes to prove - just because you have a tail, doesn't mean you're not hard and scary ;)

But see, I think that does look way less intimidating than the cropped/docked breeds. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not going to mess with a working dog either way, but I do think it looks less intimidating or scary. I also don't agree with getting a dog just for the sheer purpose of having a dog that looks intimidating.

Maybe it's just because I live with two Dobermans and know them, but I don't even think my cropped/docked guys look scary, haha. Maybe a little to the uneducated passersby when they're barking at them through the front window, but they certainly don't look any more scary to me than the all natural Dobes out there.

And to those who think natural Dobes look a little houndy, I agree. Their heads remind me of giant Dachshunds somehow. I like them though, and will have an all natural Dobe someday I hope. What I don't like is natural ears and a docked tail... they just don't look uniform to me. For me, they either need to be cropped/docked or all natural... no inbetween.

See, the average Joe is probably not going to recognize a doberman if he/she is not at least cropped. They're going to think "OH, its just some hound or mutt or something". Cropping and docking has become such a huge part of what the breed is.

Actually, in my experience to the average joe if it is black and tan it has to be a rottie or a doberman. They don't seem to care about the ears or tail or even if the dog really is a rott or dobe.

A few weeks ago I walked a black and tan cattle dog mix and had people yelling to get out of the way of the 'rottweiler'. Um... this dog was about 40 lbs, prick eared and had a long tail. But no... black and tan, must be a rott. *sigh*

Well, all I know is that if a dog is giving me THAT look, or barking and snarling at me, I'll be scared.

The LAST thing on my mind will be..

"uhm.. now, what breed is that dog.....??"

In my breed, we are allowed to crop but not dock. I like my dogs au naturale.

I personally think that most of the docked breeds look better docked. As I'm currently trying to deal with a dog who is giving herself happy tail, I agree that those breeds with the long, whip-like tails that are normally docked should be docked. In breeds that have the large, full-drop ears (like Dobies, Danes, Boxers), I prefer them cropped.

I may have used the wrong term . I mean practically earless !
You're referring to a fight crop. Which is really a misnomer since most fighting dogs have their ears.

I believe half pricked ears are preferred over rose in the pittie (both are natural).
Half prick and rose are equally preferred. Pricked or full-drop would be a fault. (At least that's the way it was before they re-did the standard this last time.)

Battle crop (the kind I do NOT like)

Err, that's no battle crop.

Ok, now I understand. I've seen plenty of pitties with full drop ears for some reason. A lot with fully erect ears as well. Pit bull ears have a mind of their own. LOL.

That crop is is the shortest I could find on a dog who actually looked like he might be APBT. Although he looks more amstaffyish.

I know there are 4 different crops used on pitties, but cant remember the names of each one. I've seen an illustration for it before. Wish I could find it again....

Here you go. This is closer to a fight crop. On a decidedly non-fighting dog. :rofl1:

No. He looks like he could take down any dog thrown in the ring with him. Seriously, all he would have to do is sit on them. :rofl1:

I have a sick sense of humor sometimes. Ooops.
