Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Ultra Premium Dog Food (This is the food I feed Belly now. I think it's great! Shiny coat, no bad breath, small, hard stool, lots of energy, the list goes on and on.)
Ingredients
Chicken, brown rice, duck, lamb meal, oatmeal, pearled barley, potatoes, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols--a source of vitamin E, citric acid, and rosemary extract), natural flavor, tomato pomace, canola oil, brewers yeast, lecithin, choline chloride, carrots, potassium chloride, flaxseed oil, dried kelp, salt, parsley flakes, calcium carbonate, zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, zinc sulfate, vitamin E supplement, vitamin B12 supplements, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), taurine, yucca schidigera extract, l-lysine, manganese sulfate, niacin, riboflavin supplement (vitamin B2), copper proteinate, grape seed oil, copper sulfate, d-calcium pantothenate, vitamin A acetate, inositol, folic acid (vitamin B), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), d-activated animal sterol (source of vitamin D3), biotin, ethylene diamine dihydriodide (source of iodine), cobalt sulfate, menadione sodium bisulfate complex (source of vitamin K activity), sodium selenite.

What I want to know is, would it be better if I switched Belly's food to Eagle Pack? I might switch her to Innova later on, if I find out where I could get it. To me it looks like Natural Balance is better, but I want more opinions. :)

of the eagle foods, the holistic line is much better than their regular line. it's right in line with the other high-end foods.

the non-holistic ones are still good, definitely much better than the usual mainstream foods like nutro and so on.

i'd rate the eagle holistic products a little higher than the natural balance. they have a higher meat content, a better supplement mix and do not contain menadione.

What about the eagle pack puppy food?
it's not part of the holistic line, but i'm more against feeding puppy food than in favor of it anyway. a good quality adult food labeled "for all lifestages" is the better choice.

menadione is synthetic vitamin K, also called vitamin K3. it is metabolized completely different than natural vitamin K and has been implicated in many different health issues, not just in dogs. it is not even recommended for use in humans anymore, and not allowed as an ingredient in over-the-couner vitamin supplements for humans.

on the chicken vs. meal question, i'll just quote from my website:

Contrary to what many people believe, meat sources in "meal" form (as long as they are from a specified type of animal) are not inferior to whole, fresh meats. Meals consist of meat and skin, with or without the bones, but exclusive of feathers/hair, heads, feet, horns, entrails etc. and have the proper calcium/phosphorus ratio required for a balanced diet. They have had most of the moisture removed, but meats in their original, "wet" form still contain about 75% water. Once the food reaches its final moisture content, the meat will have shrunk to 1/4 of the original amount, while the the meal form remains the same and you get more concentrated protein per pound of finished product.

you can read a little more on the topic here.
