my family and i live in area with a lot of strays.
The whole helping them..thing started when my mum bought home a stray cattle dog X puppy that she fond in woolies car park, we put an add in the paper that we found hoim, nobody claimed him, we tried to give him away because we already had 2 dogs and we live in town. but we ended up keeping him. he's just so special.
Then their was the tiny maltese cross that just strolled into our kitchen on fireworks night because it was scared, when i came home the next day after putting upp...found posters... she was dog gone...i looked over the back fence and saw her wandering around about 50m away, hopefully she found her home.
then their was a dog, pitbull X that got frightened and ran over to my sista and i when we were walking home, he stayed in our drive way for a couple of days while we fed him, he was covered in mange and ticks and he was only a few monthjs old poor thing. we took him to the vet and payed for his mange to get fixed, my mum was going to send him to the puond because she thought no-one would want him. but our pool man wanted a dog to look after his son and so he found a home.
currently, their is a dog that lived in a house two doors down, she is a lovely floppy-eared cattle dog and her family moved out and left her their, we take her food and water because she refuses to leave her yard eventhough the gate is always open. our nxt door neighbour has now found someone that wants to keep her..another happy ending to another happy story.

it just amazes me that people can just drive by..i can't. i hate it tho..they are just like a small child standing there..lost and confused..and in just as much danger. The snapping turtle made for a good family story tho..i knew how to pick one up becuase we had them where i worked..oh boy was he big..and people for some reason feel compelled to run over them on purpose, he would have never made it there was just too much traffic and too many lanes so i pulled over..picked him up like a huge heavy disc..right behind the back legs on each side of the tail and ran him across..he sprayed me with a musky urine that stank to high heaven..i dropped him on the other side..we were on our way to a little league baseball game..i had to stand far away from everyone until i could get home to change.

I've rescued a st.bernard, he went to live in the country with my ex's parents.
A beagle who turned out to be more than I could handle
My daughters Rott. That one is a funny story. One Thanksgiving these two dogs followed us home (we had walked to my sisters who lives down the street from us). No idea where they came from. My neighbor at the time took in the little dog, it went to live with his daughter. I said no to keeping the Rott. I figured the dog went home. 3 days later we returned and there sits this rott on our front porch! The girls used that to show the dog wants to live with us. I agreed to keep her until her home can be found. A week or two later I went out in the shed to look for something and there was blankets in the shed, water and a dish for food. The girls had been hiding the dog in the shed and taking food out to her everyday.
Then I rescued a kitten, my buddy who died a few years ago.
A kitten which came to our shop. Found her 2 homes and each time she was brought back to me. We found her a home finally. Then the cat we have now, she actually found us. And in some ways Princess, she was being nelgected when we was asked to take her in. I'm a softy, wish I had a farm, I'd have abunch of pets.

i will post one summer's worth of transietes (sp?) in my gallery..beagle went to Nebraska..Poms were reunited with their owner next day..he didn't even thank me for bathing and brushing out all of the sticktights, and bramble from their coats! They came up out of the woods across the street..it was 103 that day..the creek was dry and their little tongues were hanging..they were way over heated. Somehow they had traveled about 5 miles. As you will see..i cleaned them up real nice. Called LostDog Regestry like i always do since they had no collars. This guy pulls up in an expensive car..tells me they are his 3 yr old boy's dogs and without a thank you leaves. What a jerk. Couldn't find any owner for the beagle either. He was a dandy fat soul too. Even walked him on a leash letting him lead me to see if he would go home..put up signs and ads. The next summer i had an akita, and a little black fuzz ball with a jutting lower jaw..found that one's owner the next day. I can't do this anymore because my landlord would never allow it. So if i do find a desperate situation i take them either to gladstone shelter, or the nature sanctuary. i have a blanket in the back of my car and an er kit too. After a while you just get use to being prepared.

there has to be somebody else..it can't be just happening to me, becca and mrose..geez what you started in my head..sucker has to be written in that dog graffetti left on my mailbox..i had a cat run in the door and have babies that night! No one claimed her either. All i did was open the door..like Onyx that bust in the door and scared me out of a weeks growth last week! I had a rat that ran across the table where i was chopping produce for the elephants the summer i worked at the kc zoo. Ran right to me..i didn't know what to do so i slid him inside of my shirt where he held still for the rest of the day. I named him Sal..he was a white rat that came into the zoo to be gassed for food. What would you have done? He was incredible..i never had a cage for him and never needed one tho i had a labrador, a parrot and a cat. He went camping with us too. An old soul parakeet that would hang onto my hair, my shoulders, anything and not get off when i worked at the animal warehouse, She was a magic bird..an old soul...she got sick so i counted her off on dead count (there were about a thousand parakeets in that flight pen..this is the only bird that ever did this..the rest just flew in a panic when you would stoop down and come in thru the little door with the feed pans)..she recovered..i named her Moonbird for she was the color of a moonstone. She had a stroke and i had to have her put down. Your savedogs started a long journey thru my memories! found a baby squirrel in a feed bucket at the kennels..bottle fed her and she released her self when she was old enough to go (got out thru the dryer vent hole (we had no dryer)....oh my i will stop..that has been my whole life...one after another.

When i was 13 and it was summer my brother was mowing the yard and all of a sudden this Boxer cross comes running into the field yapping at the mower. My brother picked him up. I put a leash on the pup and walked him around town trying to find out about him. Turns out our neigbors actually witnessed soemone push him out the back seat of a car :(. So eventually I found a women who was willing to help me and she and I worked hard for three days trying to find a home for this pup. She was kind enough to keep him at her home sicne i wasent aloud. Finally her sister and brother inlaw offered to take him and he still to this day has a happy home with them.

Anouther found dog was a Beagle with one eye and scars on his back. I was riding my bike and was around 11-12. He came running up to me all skin and bones wagging his tail. I brought him home but i knew my dad would'nt let me keep him so i hid him in my old play house. I kepted him there for a couple days until one day i got there and he was gone. I still wonder about that little dog.

Once i was out in my backyard and this little white cat came up and started rubbing all over my legs. Thsi was before Pudgy and my dad hated cats at the time. So I gave her a bed yet again in my old play house and had a friend at school who i traded my lunch for little zip loc baggies of catfood for. I named her Solo and loved her very much but living on such a busy street it was enevitable she was hit by a car and killed.

I remember when I was about 10 My neighbors and I found a stray, it was a GSD. We rescued her and we named her Shredder because she shredded everything in my neighbors room when we found her.

We found some nice lady in our neighborhood who took her in. Last i know she was still with her.

I know this says the dog's we've saved. but i have saved a kitten that was pinned between two brick walls at my old apt. I heard his cry when i was playing basketball with my brother. He couldn't reach him and since I was small and skinny at the time, I got him out and he lived with us. He even moved with us to our new house a year later. He got loose from the house and got outside.. we later found him terrorizing the neighborhood cats. He Later became King of that block lol.. Although I've moved from that house, Gigi Still lives there with my uncle & aunt and in that neighborhood.

And not to mention a love bird named romeo who flew on my window, my parents did not want any animals, so i built him a little house out of shoe boxes, but he passed away 1 month later while i was at school..

My latest rescue was Me and My BF's cat Deva.. although we adopted her from a battered shelter, I consider it that we rescued her! she was only 2 pounds and 2 years old at that time and had cigarette burns and ear mites.. she's 4 years old now and overweight! we love her too much! :D

    sorry long post..

we also helped a kingfisher that got hit by a car and was just left on the road, and we had an agile wallaby joey, which we named sheila, she got to come everywhere, once we almost lost her to the heat, she stumbled around and we knew something was wrong when we could touche her pouch as usually she was very protective about this area and would act agressively if you bought your hand to near, putting sportswater into her system gave her the sugar she needed, and afetr a few hours in an air conditioned room, she was fun and bouncy again, it was quite scary tho for the whole ordeal, eventually, we gave her to a more experienced carer but we'll always remember her.

Well, all my dogs are rescues :).

Colby we found at a no-kill shelter. We had decided to get a dog and after visiting a few shelters we found the perfect dog. She's so smart and quick.

May we found in the woods behind our house. She was starving, and had just had puppies. We never found her puppies, we believe she had been used as a breeding dog. She was terrified of men. She's one big sweetheart.

We originally intended on giving Tippy, whom we got from abusive and neglective neighbors, to a family we know, but they didn't want her. Her search for a home ended. She's such an angel.

My sister, an old friend and I rescued a litter of kittens before also. We were walking and they're mother was carrying them one by one across the street and got nervous when she saw us. They now live with that old friend.

I'm so glad to hear that my partner and I aren't the only ones who try to rescue every animal we see. Dogs:
-Frankie was a 2 year old border collie mix who I found while taking a walk. She was adopted by good friends of ours.
-Remy was a 3 month old German shepherd/Rottweiler mix puppy who we found on our way to work one day. He was scampering after some children who were walking to school and when we asked if he was their dog the little girl said "no, he was my older brother's dog but he didn't want him anymore so he put him out." He was adopted by a friend of a friend & is now her spoiled baby.
-Deja had tags on and was returned to her owners.
-Scooter was a yellow lab who we found running down the street near our home. We knocked on a couple doors and it turned out he had just slipped out of his yard, so he wasn't exactly lost (ok, we rescued him from his next door neighbor's yard!) but he was about to be, and he was heading for the main road.
-Lolly was a little offwhite mop of a dog running down the street. We took her home, settled her in the laundry room with food and water and had to go back out again. When we came back a few hours later she had forced the basement window open and escaped. (how she did this I don't know. It was a small window, and the kind that cranks open). We later found out that she ran down our street and right into the path of a friend of ours who also rescues dogs. She was adopted by the friend's sister. She is now the cutest dog you ever saw.
-Chowder is a chow mix that we found 2 weeks ago, and it looks like he's staying. We tried to find a home, but no takers so far and he's so attached to me I think it might be cruel to make him leave.
    cats:
-Barnaby, my first kitty, adopted from a kill shelter at age 3. His shelter time was running out. Lived to be 17 and we still miss him.
-Tigger, a barn cat who was 6 months old and near death when my partner found him. Now 10 and going strong.
-5 baby kittens that were born in our neighbor's shed. She was going to put poison down, so we grabbed the cat carrier and told her we'd take care of everything. We spent an hour catching the kittens in a shed piled to the roof with old bikes, bbq grills, etc. We gave them to a no-kill cat rescue organization. We couldn't catch the mama cat but the same organization later was able to trap her, spay her and release her again. We still see her around the neighborhood, she's very wild.
-Tater Tot, a 5 month old kitten that my partner found in the alley behind her work. He came right to her, so home he came. He is the sweetest most affectionate cat, you'd never think he spent his first 5 months as an alley cat.

That's on top of our basic population of 2 dogs and 5 cats. whew.
