Well, I signed up today to do Obedience in 4H. After talking to CreatureTeacher, I was really hoping to be able to 'inter' Blackie in it, so I could socialize him more, but in this book thingy I got it says that any aggression toward other dogs or to people would not be tolorated and the dog would not be able to compete.
So I'm going to have to do it with Rose. I'm concerned though, because Rose is really timid (think 'un-socialized Greyhound' timid) and she is a stubborn lil cuss. lol She also doesn't get along well with strange men. I have NO idea why, but she HATES strange men. (ie, any man except Dad.)

Soooo......does anybody have any info on socializing a 6yr old, really timid dog, in the middle of winter? Any input would be greatly appriciated.

I have had a few dogs who absoultly hated men in my time. Two of which would react aggressively out of fear at men (other then my dad of course) and I had one female who would completely go into hystarics when ever she came across one who got to close.

Amazingly enough with alot of work and alot of patience each dog was able to at least deal with being around strange men. It just took alot of socializing and patience. These were all seperate dogs at seperate times in the my childhood my dad did most of the working with. I don't know what else to say I havent had a dog here on my own who had these issues.

My pit bull, Beulah, is scared of everyone for about the first 3 or 4 minutes. I just have to sit with her and let people be easy around her. For instance, I had a few people come over the other night (two girls, a man, and a 3 year old little boy). The guy was trying to feed Beulah french fries so she wouldn't be scared...She wouldn't take them. But the little boy grabbed a french fry, walked right up to her, and fed her. She didn't try to run from him or anything. But, after a few minutes, Beulah was on the couch with everyone playing and licking. I think with your dog, it's just going to take time and patience. Take her places with you so she can see more people. After a while, she should be fine.

I don't have a ton of advice but i know its always fun to watch the dog shows at the fair. My brother was going to do it with our corgi but she would all of a sudden run after another dog ! There were special four h groups you could join that were just for the dogs and they all worked together really closely and that would probally help a ton but I dont know if you have that. Good luck!
