It's a big problem here in Alaska. Most people aren't aware of how to open kill traps, so they watch their dog die. I went to a class that taught how to open all the traps. If you try to pry open a kill trap, you will never get it open.

This article tells you how to compress the springs and tiw them off with string to release your dog:

It was not a hunter that set the trap. With no permit and setting it illegally, it was a POACHER. There's a world of difference between the two.

There are a lot of trap accidents around here, too. But I don't think they are poachers, they are hunters. But dog people hike around with their dogs a lot, so it's sort of unavoidable.

And incredibly sad. Seems like there's one or two every week during this season.
