Digestive enzyme question

Would a digestive enzyme powder lose its efficacy at all if it sat on the food a while? Specifically, wet food?

When the dogs finish one meal, I go ahead and get the next meal ready and throw their meds in with it. So it can sit around for up to 12 hours. I was thinking about buying a digestive enzyme this weekend, but I don't know if it would screw it up at all to sit like that? Not gonna waste my time buying it if it's not gonna work right lol.

I think that would be more of a question on a company-by-company basis, I have some digestive enzyme powder that I give to Jinj when he's having issues and I mix it in with some wet food, but I've never let it set before. Have you looked at the website of the company? Maybe e-mail them?

Well it depends on the product... many of them are meant to "pre-digest" the food and have to sit on the food for a specified period of time to be effective (usually at least 15-30 minutes I think). If it is meant to supplement their own enzymes, I really don't know and second the suggestion to call the manufacturer. Although some of them are very reluctant to say anything that isn't exactly what is on the label, many of them are very helpful.

Good idea! Haha. I shot the company an email today (these guys for anyone curious: http://www.nzymes.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=8) and the response was that they should be added at feeding time, if added too far in advance their job will be done before the dog ever eats it, defeating the purpose. I'm not 100% certain on how these things work, but since that is what they told me, I'll just go with it.

It's mostly just an issue for when my mom feeds them. Which is, most of the time. So I'll just have to come up with a way that she can easily add it at mealtime, without any extra thought or work required from her. Maybe just leave the powder in the scoop, next to the food bowl, so she just has to dump it in. hm.

They make tiny little versions of tupperware-like containers that are meant to hold sauces and stuff. I've found they're great for meds, and if you put it in there and out it next to the bowl and write "DUMP THIS IN THERE" I think it should be simple enough. If my mum feeds, I do get the food ready ahead of time, including an enzyme, but I leave a bottle of water by the bowls and she knows to ass water before feeding.

Yeah that could work too. It just complicates things when she feeds them lol, but some nights I don't get home till after 7 and she doesn't want to make them wait (plus, they pester her for dinner). In the past when I have asked her to do things like this, she forgets or she just makes up her own dose and puts in however much she thinks looks like enough. =P

Hopefully a simple dumping motion of pre-measured powder will be easy lol.

Yep, I was going to suggest just putting the amount in a ziploc bag placed on top of the food bowl

Good God. Well, these enzymes must at least taste good, because I had the scoop sitting out all ready to go, and my cat took it upon himself to lick it clean. Dumb animals lol.
