My 8 year female Athena (brown one in Avator) was playing at the dog park with a grey hound and was working extra hard at keeping up (hey at least she tried lol). After we got home I noticed she was very stiff and limping. She didn't get over her soreness for a few days and I took her to the Vet fearing a knee tear (I already rebuilt her other knee.)

The Vet examined her and she has Arthritis and he says it is the type that will be bad.

My question is this, he gave me a whole bunch of ideas on how to treat it....some being very expensive.

What are the best treatment you guys have seen for Arthritis?

Thanks for any info.

a friend of mine has seen really great results from adequan injections... other than that i'm afraid i'm not much help. :(

fish oil combats inflammation in general tho, so if you don't give it already, it would be a good idea for supportive care.

Salmon oil mixed with food to start. There are some great ones out there for dogs. I use the Grizzly Salmon Oil. Get you pooch on a glucosamine, chondroitan, msm, and vitamin C supplement right away. Follow the guidelines on the container. There are many great products out there that have all of these ingredients in one product with the exception of the fish oil. My male pug has some knee problems and is arthritic. He was always very active and started slowing down and not wanting to jump etc. I started him on the above regimen and he is good as new and bouncing off the walls once again. Here are some names to the good products...don't get them through your vet!! You can find them a lot cheaper on line. Synovi G3 (this is a really good one) Cosequin and Glyco-Flex are both good as well. I hope your pooch improves with these!! Another thing to pay attention to is making sure your dogs nails are clipped short often as this helps keep too much strain off the joints...I would also make sure your pooch spends the majority of it's time on a NON-SLIP surface. :)

I agree with Showpug. Bear has arthritis and I just started him on the Glucosamine 6 weeks ago and he is MUCH better. My vet said this is a good med because they can be on it long term, as opposed to the Rimadyl that can have side effects. I get the Glucosamine at Costco (don't know if you have that store where you are) but it is a discount warehouse and it is very inexpensive compared to Rimadyl. Bear is running and playing again, makes me want to cry with happiness when I see that, and he is 11-years-old. Good luck to you, let us know what you decide!

My Rottweiler was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia and tendenitis, so of course she has horrible secondary arthritis. I have been successfully helping her with the following supplements. I found a wonderful liquid Glucosamine supplement at a tack shop it contains Glucosamine Sulfate, Glucosamine HCL,Chondroitin Sulfate, MSM, Manganese Ascorbate, Vitamins A,C, and natural mixed tophererols -Vitamin E. The liquid is easy to add to her food, and it gives you the amount to give for the weight of the pet. I also make sure she gets plenty of Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, the best oil I found is Hemp seed oil which can be found in most health food stores. I also give her canned sardines packed in water, Canned wild Alaskan Salmon, ground flax seeds, flax seed oil, I have also given her Fish body oil, never fish liver oil or cod liver oil (if you are feeding kibble it is not advisable to give fish liver oils). I give her yucca root (I order from Solid Gold dog foods), I give Yucca to her 4 days on 3 days off this is for the inflammation from the arthritis. I will take her off Yucca for about 3 months each year and supplement with either ginger, turmeric, Bromelain or Boswellin.
I also make sure I feed her a few raw meals each week, usually for supper. I add digestive enzymes to her raw meals and live active bacterial cultures or organic plain yogurt with active bacteria cultures. I add a raw egg shell and all and put it in the blender with different veggies, garlic cloves, etc.

I never feed her any veggies from the nightshade group which would be veggies like white potato's, tomatoes etc they increase inflammation.

I also made sure she is on a good dog kibble, I give her a few turkey necks and raw bones with cartilage on them to give her back the cartilage she requires.
For exercise, I make sure it is consistent. There are no long hikes on one day then a short one the next day. All her walks are the same, if I want to increase the hikes for summer I do it gradually. Swimming is wonderful exercise for a dog with arthritis as there is no impact on the joints.

Good luck to you, my Rottweiler is now 7 and she is in great shape. Even the vets are amazed at how well she is doing. You would never know by looking at her that she is in such rough shape ;)
Here are a couple of websites to check out as well

Amstaffer,
Bear is 60 lbs, so pretty close to your dog's weight. He started on 1500 mg a day for the first 6 weeks, then went to 1000 mg per day. I would check with your vet about dosage, but I'd bet it would be pretty much the same. The Glucosamine usually comes in 500 mg pills, so I'd just give to him 3 times a day, then it went down to twice a day. Yes, its the same stuff people take, you can buy it anywhere. Best wishes for you and your dog!

Amstaffer...please don't forget about giving MSM (a natural anti-inflammatory) and Vitamin C which helps rebuild healthy cells and helps keep current cells healthy. I swear by the above ingredients. Glucosamine alone is good, but in conjunction with the above it's even better :)

Exactly Showpug, In order for Glucosamine to be effectively utilized by the dogs body you need with Manganese or Vitamin C. I love the liquid Glucosamine I have with the other supplements. I found it's cheaper to purchase at a horse tack shop. The supplement I give my Rottie has all the essential supplements included, all I do is give the Yucca root seperate so I can control how much of this she gets. Yucca root is the best natural anti inflammatory I have come across to date. ;)

I've been giving CJ Glucosamine/Chondroitin tablets for 4 years now and they have made a big difference. CJ is about 50 lbs. I started her on 2 tablets of the 3 a day kind for about 3 months and now give her one tablet of the 2 a day kind. If her arthritis gets bad once in a while, I then give her a coated baby aspirin which does the trick.

You might find the human grade supplements are even less expensive, especially if you buy them someplace like GNC. They tend to be a little better quality, too, I think.

Different dogs, like different people, respond to different treatments. Noni juice and cat's claw are two others that are very useful in treating arthritis.

Amstaffer, I meant to mention as well that when you go into the website for Syn-Flex (which is a wonderful supplement)

Look under Resources there is tons of information on Arthritis for you to read.

I looked up this product, It does list having MsM in it? Am I reading it wrong or would I have to add that in addition? if I used it.

Noni?

Has anyone ever heard of NONI ? I have used it and used it for my arthritic, chronic skin irritated and she has fatty tumors that were beginning to weigh her down in the stomach....I have used ONE TSP once a day for 2 weeks and it is amazing stuff. No it is not rasins or grapes....look at the juices added on the ingredients and find the ones that do not. IT works, she loves it, acts like a pup and the swelling from her constant skin irritation has TOTALLY dimished and its natural. She weighs about 56 lbs and I started with 1 TBSP the first day and follow up each morning with 1 tsp. IT WORKS! This is not a lie or any hype. NONI JUICE the more pure the better. I got it from www.Swansonvitamines.com and if you know anyone with health problems it is amazing what detoxifying your system does. My vet said it must be that our animals as well as us are picking up toxins from our enviroment and foods and that is why some will have arthritis, fibromyalgia, stiff joints and so so much more. This does work. Nothing the vet tries was working for her and it is amazing how she feels and plays. Try it with love for your animal. I even found a vet online that has treated 76000 animals and had a 90% success rate on all I told you and so much more. He said for DEEP wounds, other health problems. I found it by searching for " Noni for PETS" and I know if you try it, your pet will look at you in less than a week with so much vigor and life and ease you will almost cry. Search and read about it. I have used it for more serious things going on with me and ONE of many things I can tell you is, my cholestrol dropped 100 points. Another is all my fibromyalgia has mellowed or even left in some spots and no more acid reflux, my blood pressure came back down and my doctor couldnt believe my change in 3 weeks. Just read about it and try it if all these other things seem not to work. Walmart has a cheaper brand with only 3mg per serving if you want lessor value and it is made with apple and pear juice, but doesn't do as much and doesn't taste so good. But read, honest. It changed my dogs life and makes her alive again. Just a lil help from a fellow animal lover!

As for NONI JUICE I advise anyone who is thinking of wasting their money on this product to read this article. The article is written by a well known Natural health Doctor whom I would trust over some hype on the internet.

http://www.drweil.com/u/QA/QA64352/

It seems the only 3 posts that jazzinitup has posted have been about the wonderful benefits of NONI JUICE:) Perhaps a rep?

Any way, any thing is worth trying...but, it's always a good idea to research with reliable resources before falling for false claims which a company has been sued for.
