Deciding on a breed...

Oooh I'll have to tell her that...I guess that does make sense, brushing them would remove the loose hairs. 
If I can convince her that brushing will help, then I just need her to realize that 20-30 pounds is not that big! That's like half the size of Molly!
Thank you SOOO much everyone! Now I just need tons of luck lol, it's hard to get my mom to budge when she says no to something once. Took 8 months to get her to say yes to rats...
Edit~ I thought about a sheltie, too. Our neighbors had one (the people who now have a lab and border collie), he was a really yappy dog. Of course that could be just because he had THEM as owners, they really aren't fit as dog owners. Those dogs just sit outside all day no matter the weather...they were once out their in the rain, sitting near the door in the mud barking their heads off.

Just got into this ....I agree Stirder ....to me size isn't a factor when it's involved with kids. Temperment is. None of my goldens in 60 years have ever snapped at kids. I'd rather step over a dog than having one all over the floor to make me play hop-scotch !I've never owned a small dog, but have met many that drive me nuts !! Believe me, I'm not putting small dogs down.! I just like the breed I'm most familiar with.

as much as I love german shepherds, I know that a well bred, properly raised and trained golden will put up with a lot more from children than any of my gsd's, who by the way have had ears and tails tugged. my neice learned to stand up while visiting us by holding a tight hand full of tankers (god rest his soul) hair. he wagged the whole time and would come up and stand in front of her waiting for her to do it again, then he would walk her around the living room in a large circle. never saw him move that slow before or after. but a good golden...you could almost get away with slowly cutting them in half with a butter knife and they would look at you like "ouch, that hurts but I love you so if you really want to do it, go ahead "

It doesn't sound like that that particular sheltie had a very good home.
But they are notorious for barking. They LOVE it. Shelties are very high energy too, and need lots of attention. But if that isn't a problem for you, I would say go for it! Skye is a sheltie and as long as he's brushed at least every other day there is never really much hair around.There's a pic of him in my profile if you are curious about how adorable they can be.
Shelties are great. From the ones I have been around, they are barkers, but at the same time are very docile when being handled. I still say Shih-Tzu and you can keep them clipped to where they don't shed as bad. I have one (a mix in my sig) and he never sheds. I recommend Shih Tzus and Goldens to anyone. All the ones I have ever met are such loveable little creatures. My breed of choice is of course the Chihuahua, but they aren't for everyone. So I wouldn't recommend them to everyone.
My GSD was WONDERFUL with children. My Labrador was WONDERFUL with children. I've heard that Schnauzers (mini and standard) are good with children...never had one myself but had friends with them and there were kids...very nice little dogs that don't shed or at least not much if any. Ummmm. I love Goldens too....lots of hair.
But the most important factors are finding a reputable breeder....making sure....read our links on that stuff. Also how they're raised and trained makes a world of difference no matter what breed.
Whatever you decide, do lots of research first...LOTS....on socializing and training along with everything else. Good luck.

Yeah, I would love a shelter dog...I do look at websites of shelters around here just to see what they have, but it seems like most of the dogs are labs or lab mixes, or some other breed of dog just as big. And when they do have small dogs, they get adopted rather quickly...
The Aussie seems like it would work really well with us, if I can get my mom past the long hair. I'm sure once she were to fall in love with it the hair wouldn't be a big deal.

I have a young toddler and often babysit a 1 and a half year old too.I have a min pin who is wonderful with all kids even mean kids he just runs and hides till they stop pulling tails.They dont shed much and come in a few colors.Hes also great with other dogs too as I also have a German Sheperd.I hope you find something you both agree on.Good luck.
