sheep is the predominant stock....but cattle is not "rare" by any means...different regions in aus. are used for different stock sometimes, so we have lines that work cattle more and lines more experienced in sheep and sorting...including the "backing" ability...then we have some that play in both :D and again it is this versatility that i find attractive

we are in "Happy beef" (happy beef, funny nick name to our large free range raised canadian beef in northern BC and Alberta mostly) central....for working cattle no we dont prefer longer legs...smaller allows for the hoof to go above the head if a kick is ever close enough...this is my preference
Hmm this makes sense to me. ACD breeders have also told me their dogs are a lot stockier than BCs for example because it's easier to avoid kicks and duck. Plus they're more built and solid than BCs because they tell me that in case a kick does land (god forbid), these smaller stockier dogs take it a lot better than a thinner, taller dog with less bone and muscle.

It is Avalon Malt, out of Coolibah Mindii and Borahview Gunnah he was 11months old at the time and it was his first time on unbroke sheep...and tucking in is a skill for safety, I am happy he can fold in a tuck his head tight while hitting the ground....getting run over is not good at all

his first time on un dog broke sheep, that was a surprise to all of us...the barb just made a 180 turn and he did what he could to stay safe...lol, total fluke the camera caught it...to me it is a funny picture not a example of "what to do" other then one of how to stay dafe when stuff goes south :D

Just wanted to jump in and say that this thread sort of seems like it's started attacking OP, who, to me, seems like she is just trying to educate about the breed. Maybe take it down a notch?
Ditto.

I've read this whole thread, and the one in which Sara and Linds were talking about their tentative breeding plans. I've clearly missed some drama in other threads, because all I see here is mess that makes me feel a lot of people I generally like are getting nasty.

For those of you commenting on Shawn's photos of the sheep "ducking" have you ever herded with a dog? Seriously? Shawn works with the most respected herding trainer in BC. Instead she is getting comments from some arm chair critics who have no idea what they are talking about? :lol-sign:

FWIW I was confused and unable to keep up with your explanation of German / Australian C/Koolie as well.

I'd like to know:

a.) When the split happened

b.) How the two were separated and what physical differences there are (if any)

c.) If C/Koolies are still outcrossed with other breeds (i.e Kelpie, BC, Aussie)

Shawn's dogs don't look all the same. They are not cookie cutter dogs. She has brought in several different lines from several different kennels. You are comparing her program to the K/Coolies represented here... from what my research indicated L & S dogs originated from a kennel that does heavy merle to merle and heavy inbreeding and line breeding. With that kind of program I would hope the physical characteristics would be much more fixed!

Here are my favorite C/Koolies :) Not merle!

Want to guess what kennel they are from? Anyone?

And you still don't know what ducking is?

ETA: Shawn not sure why you bothered, I mean, your Aussie getting run over by a sheep surely doesn't qualify at ducking! Even though Malt is 100% Australian import lines, he still doesn't qualify at a C/Koolie! Lynn must not know what she is talking about! :rofl1:

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing the stupidity radiating from this thread... And it's not coming from Avalon!
