I noticed that there is a thread discussing dog food, but I wasn't sure if this exactly fit into it. As you may already know I am new to owning a pet and I put a deposit on a 9 week old Akita which I will have Wednesday. I used to watch commercials an IAMS seemed like a great company for dog food, but for some reason a lot of negative feedback goes to it on this forum. I also read in someones signature that IAMS tortures animals. I'm very Anti-PETA, as much as I may sound arrogant to the animal lovers on this forum, I also love animals extremely, but I do not support their cause to turn everyone into vegetarians and their other propaganda. Therefore I just want to know what kind of dog food I should buy for my Akita, I heard that they were vegetarians mostly but I'm not sure. If anyone can put me in the right direction please, I would appreciate.

Also, I do not wish to offend anyone who is part of PETA, I'm glad you are fighting for a cause that some people might disagree on. I just do not wish to make enemies, only friends :)

PETA is an organization that promotes vegetarianism. They are sort of like the greenpeace of animal rights. And no, they don't like Iams. They had one of their people undercover at the Iams research labs and found they really tortured their lab animals (dogs).

Regardless of how you feel about that they don't make a very good product.

When choosing a dog food look for ones that are made with human grade meat and that are organic. You can do your research on our threads or at www.mordanna.com/dogfood

The product that we recommend the most is Innova EVO. It's wonderful. It's as close to feeding a natural raw diet as you'll get. The ingredients are whole and fresh and they use a slow cooking products so they don't lose enzymes or nutrition. You can read about them and their products at www.naturapet.com

Hope that Helps

Thank you very much Saje, I also read that EVO was awesome dog food. I think animal abuse is terrible and PETA should work at that but I think they need to relax on the chicken, beef, and pork industry. I don't think anyone will stop eating meat because they don't like seeing chickens get their throats cut :p

What type of food should I lean to, if my dog turns out to be a vegetarian? Does EVO make vegetarian food?

You think your dog is a vegetarian? Do you want to feed vegetarian food to your dog? I'm just curious. I've never looked into feeding vegetarian (even though I am a vegetarian) but I could find some info for you.

Well I read a lot about the Akita, and it said that nearly 90% of Akita's are vegitareans?

How odd! I've never heard that before!! Getting a Vegetarian diet just right for a dog is very, very hard, especially for a novice owner!!!!! I think given the choice a dog would choose meat over a carrot any day! ;) I know Gus would! Even though he does like the odd Carrott! Lol!
I think you're best bet is to start off with something like Innova Evo and see how you get on!! :) If it doesn't work out then you'll have to consider something else. You'll have lots to do with a little pup already, without having to make proper balanced meals out of veggies!! Plus a puppy will need meat proteins for healthy growth and proper bone development!

Saying that though I found this link for you : http://www.vegetariandogs.com/
It sounds like a very interesting book and something you may have to think about buying if your dog decides to go "Veggie" Lol! Hope this helped! :D

One of the reasons I initially chose the Innova food line, Hydro, is that my Filas originated in an area of extreme poverty. Filas have been found in their natural habitat that have rarely had more than scraps of meat. For dogs, especially the males, that can weigh over 150 pounds, that's amazing. The Innova line incorporated a good variety of food sources - all top notch, organic and human grade. My dogs have thrived on it. Since the company came out with the EVO formula I've put them on that and they are doing even better. And they actually prefer the kibble to the raw meat and bones I give them periodically!

Your Akita should do very well on the Innova foods.
