Frankly, I'd rather see none of those. I appreciate their effort to make a standard for the labradoodle, but I totally despise the business they are making of it, and I don't think it makes their intentions very credible.

nobody is bashing mixed breeds..I hate it when people say that...read the entire posts for crying out loud..its about bashing mixed breed BREEDERS...they are irresponsible to be putting two breeds together to make a new one...they are backyard breeders and nothing more..it has nothing to do with liking the breed..I love mutts...but they are unfortunately the outcome of some idiot that wanted a few bucks...

*rolls eyes* anywho...

No one is bashing mixed breed dogs, we're bashing the puppy mills that breed them while dogs in shelters die because they don't have homes. I've got two mixed breeds dogs and they are absolutely amazing - beautiful, smart, sweet. But puppy mills (that's who breeds these mutts - they're NOT BREEDS!) bother me.

My question is this - if the designer dog breeders want to be taken seriously, want to establish an actual breed... amongst other things...

WHY do they use cutesy names? Louis Dobermann didn't call his new breed a PinchyRott, or a GreyGerrier. Cockapoo, Labradoodle... that's just combining the names of the established breeds used to create the mix.

The Silken Windhound comes to mind - it's an interesting "breed" - but its creators chose to give it a new, unique name, not something borrowed from the breeds used to create it. Imagine, would the SW have as much respect as it does today if its creators called it a Borwhip, or a Whipzoi? I think not.

I know a name is just a name, but it's always been something that has bugged me about the whole designer breed fad.

And one comment on health - someone posted above the health issues associated with the PWD and another breed, using this to cite reasons why *not* to get one of those breeds... and instead, g witha Labradoodle. When you mix two breeds to get a mixed breed, you risk passing on the health problems of BOTH breeds used.

So with that in mind, here are potential problems with Labradoodles, using information on health problems common in the Standard Poodle and Labrador Retriever... just as an example:
~ hip dysplasia
~ predisposition to GDV
~ retinal dysplasia
~ muscular dystrophy
~ elbow dysplasia
~ OCD
~ PRA
~ juvenile cataracts
~ corneal dystrophy
~ Addison's Disease
~ Cushings
~ vWD
~ Sebaceous Adenitis
~ liver shunts
~ JRD
~ mitral valve disease
~ autoimmune disease
~ AIHA

Personally, I'd rather just deal with *one* set of breed specific health problems... ;) That is, if I am purchasing a dog with health in mind.

People here do understand Cockapoos have been around since the late 60s-early 70s they are nothing new and extremely close to being considered a real breed. Most of my breed books list the Cockapoo in it.

Wow. The closed mindedness in this thread surprise me. :(

I, for one, would never buy a "cockapoo" or any other poo mix, just because poodles do not interest me.

But, I will never condemn anyone who has actually found a responsible breeder, and then purchased from those breeders. And yes, there are some very rare responsible poo breeders out there. They are hard to find, but you can. And Tinaweena is proof of that. Others may have looked down on you and questioned you on this thread, but I want to thankyou for for looking into finding a good breeder and not supporting those awful bybs. GOOD for you!

BTW, someone said something about the ridiculous cutesy names. Actually, you will find the majority of responsible labradoodle breeders HATE that their dogs are called this, and want it changed.

But, with all this said, I do HATE the awful bybs and puppymills irresponsibly producing dogs for money. I just simply will not carelessly judge and attack all poo-mix owners and breeders and put them all into one awful category.

There are many great mixed breeds wanting to be loved. I only fault those BYBs who charge way too much !! If they were dog lovers, they wouldn't breed. They are money lovers .

I hope if the "Australian Labradoodle" ever does become a breed, they'll change the name. It just sounds so stupid. Maybe "Australian Poodle" or something.

Madeline is so cute. I have a question: is a cocker/poodle mix a bit easier to groom than a pure poodle? Those tight poodle curls require a lot of attention. Could a person get by with grooming once to twice a week with a cockapoo, anyone who owns one?
My own experience is pretty much zippo with this mix. A sister in law has a dumb one that they spoil and hold all the time which is why it is dumb, my mom-in-law had a rescued one that they loved. The way to get a good dog is to get a puppy from two healthy in every area parents and discipline. Do they really shed less?

I think anybody on here that owns a pit bull, and has fought this fight for years will agree, that you get out of a dog, what you put into it (yes, with a few exceptions).
You'll also notice that at least 90% of the pit bull owners on here got their dogs from shelters or rescues....and most of them were not puppies...

On another point...why do all the people that think buying mixed breeds from breeders not go to rescues instead? There are maltipoo or labradoodle or whatever other mix rescues out there....alot of times they'll even get pregnant bitches in their foster programs and need to find new homes for the resulting pups..why not go there?
