Hi All,

I'm new here but have lurked a bit and people seem knowledgeable about doggie nutrition so I'd like some opinions on what I'm feeding my dogs. I have a 11 y.o. GSD and a 8 y.o. LabxGSD. Both around 100 pounds.

I used to use Science Diet and Eukanuba, but since I've become more educated about dog foods, I've been using Chicken Soup as the base dog food in their diet. I like to mix a large (35#) bag of Chicken Soup Senior with a small(15#) bag of another food for variety, and I change the secondary food every couple of months. Based on what I've read, I have so far tried mixing in Solid Gold (that did NOT work out as they had the runs while they were on that), Eagle Pack Holistic (seems like good stuff), and California Natural (also seems good).

Ok, now to the question. I was thinking of trying Healthwise foods next, but I have not seen much of any discussion of this food. It appears to be from the same people who make Calif Natural, Innova, and Karma, and the ingredients look good, but I'm thrown off by the low price. Its much less expensive than most of the other premium foods. Is there something I'm missing here, or is it a quality food with a bargain price tag?

With two large dogs, finding high quality food for a less than premium price is important. Any experience or opinions on Healthwise foods? Comments on the Healthwise or any of the other foods would be much appreciated! Thanks!:)

Even though Binn is still a puppy I use Chicken Soup Adult for his diet. Puppy food has a high percentage in protein and he needs a low percentage. Chicken Soup has all the right ingredients he needs so Im happy with Chicken Soup.

I've also heard Purina One Adult is good as well although I have never tried it.

HealthWise is Natura's budget line. It has a somewhat lower meat content, but the ingredients are still of the same high quality as the other Natura products. It is definitely a better quality food than the Chicken Soup (which has recently been reformulated by the way).

I wouldn't call anything made by Purina a good quality food... especially if it is one of the varieties you can find at a grocery store.

Also, please don't compare foods by the price tag on the bag. Figure out the daily feeding amount for the individual dog and compare how long each bag would last. There's a calculation example here:
