Thoughts on using a nipple shield to start?
Also I am finally on WIC, had issues getting an appointment to work with my work schedule... But yeah. I'm a little frustrated, though. They were VERY pushy about their ideas of breastfeeding and how it should be done. Which is fine, I get it I suppose. However, I wanted to pump from birth as well as breastfeed on demand so that others could also bottle feed my baby and I wouldn't be the only one capable of providing that for him. WIC won't give me a pump until I return to work. The lady I spoke to claimed that they won't give me a pump from the start unless he ends up in the NICU because they don't recommend pumping from birth because it can hinder supply. I get that, I do. However I do know that if you pump between feedings and still breastfeed on demand, then no, it doesn't effect your supply. That's what I want to try to do and I felt like they were taking that choice away from me. Just upset me a little and I may end up renting a hospital pump since WIC won't give me one until I return to work. (Which they don't recommend until 6 weeks after and were reluctant to agree to give me a pump when I go back to work 2 weeks after.)
I'm 40 weeks tomorrow and 3 CM dilated. I have contractions pretty often, but none of them ever stick around and it drives me nuts.

Barbara, I wouldn't use a nipple shield unless you need to. Also, you're right about feeding on demand and pumping after not hindering your supply but I would put off giving her a bottle for as long as you can. We waited five weeks (I know you won't be able to wait this long). I try to pump once a day just to build a freezer supply, to relieve my too-full boobs in the morning and just in case something went wrong and I couldn't feed her.

I was told by my breast feeding consultant that nipple shields hinder your supply and should not be used unless absolutely necessary. I had very sore cracked nipples and even then was told not to use one. Same thing with pumping - the recommendation is to wait until 6 weeks because it takes that long for your body to figure out supply and demand with the baby. So I'd wait as long as you can even 4 weeks minimum so you don't mess with your supply. The baby will have two growth spurts during that time so it's important to have enough milk!
Well of course they have specific breastfeeding criteria. They don't want to be paying out for a pump from the get go just because when it isn't necessary. You have to remember this is a public service and they have guidelines and aren't at the whim of whatever costly thing you may want.
I think renting from the hospital is a good idea if you feel you must pump right from the start. I had a pump from the hospital from the start because she was in the nicu and i had to pump to get her any breastmilk at all but it's not ideal

How old was everyone's babies before they left them with a babysitter/family member?
Lillian is going to be 3 weeks old tomorrow. I've left her with my mom a few times for doctor's appointments, but for no more than an hour. Tonight is her dad's birthday, and he wants me to go out to dinner with his family and leave the baby with my mom. I'm already pumping for her and she's getting some formula, so that's not a concern, and I'm planning on going but I'm really nervous.

Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one. Although Lillian's good in her car seat, and she's actually been fine the few times we've taken her out...but we've always had the option of leaving quickly and a nice restaurant for a sit-down dinner with a three week old sounds like the opposite of fun to me (and probably the staff and other patrons).
I'm glad Everleigh survived staying with her grandparents. I've talked myself into the fact that I'm just being neurotic, my mom's been fine with her so far, and I'll probably have a good time. Here's hoping I don't have a major panic attack during dinner, or cry when we leave.

Well when we got home, his parents had invited DH's pet-hating aunt over (his moms twin), Everleigh peed on our new microfiber couch, Obi got off his leash (after I told them he would be fine until we got home) and ran after my neighbors yappy American Eskimo, and my MIL popped a bottle liner and wasted an entire feeding of pumped milk, or white gold as I call it. Ugh.

Exactly! Next time (which won't be any time soon if I can help it!) she will go to my moms.
I'm not sure if I'm more annoyed at the wasted milk, the fact that they invited someone to our house without checking with us, or that they took Obi out after I said he'd be good until we got home.
I'm just lucky that Obi has grown some brains finally because he totally could have jumped the fence separating him from our neighbors spitz, though he's thankfully mostly all talk and while he's a bully, he's not aggressive.

At least you know it can't be too much longer, Barbara.
Lillian looks like she's getting a bit of a diaper rash. She's got a few red spots on her bottom. We're not using cloth (yet) because so many people have bought us diapers, we might as well use them.
Aside from changing her as frequently as possible and letting her have some naked time, any suggestions?
