Hey there, my pomeranian had his patella corrected as of Mon, July 26, and was released this morning. With all of the stories I read, it seems like everybody dog walks right away after the surgery. My dog doesn't appear to want to walk. They also stated that he did tear his crucating ligament. Any ideas? I'm just still not sure what to expect with this surgery

Did your vet go over this with you???? He/she should have discussed the whole process, after care, what to expect, what to watch out for that might be abnormal etc.

Jose` wasn't in any shape to walk right after the surgery. He was in terrific pain for a couple of days...miserable. Then he started feeling better and could hobble around.

With that ligament torn, it makes sense that your dog would be in additional pain and have additional healing time needed. I'd recommend you talk to your vet about your dog's particular condition and what to expect. I hope he heals up soon and that the surgery was successful.

Yeah the vet went over this with me. I didn't do physical therapy on him the first day and he appeared to be in a lot of pain. I did start on it his physical therapy the second day and he started walking. I guess he was just sore from the surgery.

Can anyone give me an average for this surgery? Our little Doxie, Pebbles, will need one in about 4-6 mos. and we were quoted "around 2k" today from the vet college.
I'm curious if this is really an average or if it's high as it's a teaching hospital?

That sounds a little high, but it could be your location too. Mia's surgery was just under $1k for the one knee, and she got a pin.

Thanks. I'll be calling around today to check, closer to our area. I think the surgery is so high because it's the teaching hospital. Makes no sense to me but who knows I guess.

A Holistic Vet's Opinion Concerning Luxating Patella Surgery

Just read an article by a Dr. Becker, a holistic vet. She writes, "In my opinion, if surgery is even going to be considered, it’s because the dog’s quality of life is so poor."

Here's my blog post about Dr. Becker's viewpoint: Another Opinion On Canine Luxating Patella (Trick Knee Or Floating Kneecap) Surgery

It's too late now, but would it have been in Simon's best interest to delay his surgery??

Fiona (Boston Terrier) had a grade 3 LP and had surgery for it. The surgery went very well, but she took about 6 weeks to start putting weight on that leg. She had quite a bit of muscle atrophy.

Then one day she decided it was fine. Started using it like nothing happened lol total goof.

That was around 2 yrs ago and she is a crazy little Boston with zero issues. I do keep her on a joint supplement though.
