I know these dogs are huge, white and fluffy, but according the lady that had fostered Deputy, the shelter had him listed as "Pyr Mix".

He does have a thick double coat, plus his paws are huge. His weight (before he got sick) was 70+.

I don't see it. . .but he could still have Pyr in there. I've known many mixes who have breeds in them you never would have imagined!
Of course shelter labels are often BS, too. When I adopted Fable they bent over backwards enough to convince me she was actually a purebred GSD, even talking about the story of the person who relinquished her. She's grown up to be like 20-25 lbs, so. . .:p
I've seen dogs at the shelter being labeled as purebred when they're not, and also being labeled as really rare breeds/mixes when there's a ridiculously small chance they actually are. It gets people interested in adopting.

Yes, that would be me being absolutely no help at all.

Our shelters are also on the "rare" kick. For awhile a shelter that had just recently gotten busted for neglect and other issues, had a dog listed as a "Thai Ridgeback".

I see no Pyr.
Me neither. But what do you see? I see Lab X Catahuala (sp?).

I was going to say Anatolian, he does look more massive than your typical mutt, but it could just be the photos. It's always possible the people who turned him in told them he had Pyr in him, which could totally be possible, who knows.

Just looking at him I don't see Pyr, but that being said I've come across a few known Pyr crosses and a handful of suspected Pyr crosses and oddly enough most actually do kinda look like your dog.

But, he also looks like a generic large brindle dog too so I don't think you'll ever really know. But regardless, a very very nice looking dog!

Looking at pictures of Anatolian, he DOES sorta resemble one.

Whatever he is, I wish I could clone him. He is just so soft and wonderful. His favorite thing to do is lay right next to you on the bed and sleep. Once he passes it will be hard to find one like him. :(

I could believe Pyr mix. Breeding a Pyr to a (homozygous)short haired brindled dog would produce half short haired brindle puppies, and half short haired fawn puppies. He also has a lot of mass behind him somewhere. The ears look funky tho like it was a mix of floppy ear and prick eared dogs.

Pyr mix doesn't seem that unrealistic. Just because he doesn't look like "A Pyr" doesn't mean there isn't some in there somewhere, and the typical pyr features would be hidden by something else... Genetics is complicated. And also, some people are really bad a guessing breeds (myself included). That said, I'd also believe Anatolian shepherd mix.
