Can I give these bones?

For my sister's college graduation party, we are roasting a 70-pound pig on a spit in the backyard. After the pig is carved and served, there will be a lot of bones. And I can't stand the idea of all those bones covered with bits of succulent meat going to waste!

I know that you're not suppossed to give dogs cooked bones. But what if I give them the larger bones, such as the leg bones and some of the larger ribs (provided the humans don't get them first). I'm thinking about giving them the bones under supervision, and letting the boys nibble and gnaw all the meat off. Then I'll take the bones away before they start really trying to chomp down on them.

What do you think?

I'm with Nicole....large dogs such as your boys can easily splinter even the largest of cooked bones. It can happen so quickly.

Hannah can even splinter raw beef ribs, and beef bones are quite a bit sturdier than pork bones.

Now if you can convince them to hack off a couple of the porker's ribs pre-roasting, then go for it. :) Or better yet, have them cut off the feet. Raw pigs feet are a doggie delicasy.

I have seen REPEATEDLY everywhere I have searched about homecooked food.........NO COOKED BONES OF ANY KIND!

That being said, I remember growing up and our dogs getting the big soup bones after my mom made soup, or the hog roast bones........nothing ever happened to them, but I am sure it HAS happened to dogs, else there wouldn't be warnings. :)

I wouldn't either, especially the ribs. Even raw, they are soft. Gunnar will work thru 3lbs of them in 20 minutes, leaving nothing behind. 3lbs of ribs is the fat end of the rack and about the size of a dinner plate, a good amount of food and it doesn't take him long, and he's not even a fast eater.

MAYBE the big leg bones with meat on them but if I heard any crunching, I'd take them away.
