Education is key. And I don't believe it just teaching the parts that are convenient. We need to start at the beginning.

And I believe it tougher laws on dog owners. I don't believe in "oopsies" when your dog escapes your home/yard 2, 3, or 4+ times. Even the first time can be prevented. And whether or not the dog being loose was an "accident", there are still consequences to be had.

Just because the neighbor of a friend "accidentally" had their 3 Boxers get loose, it won't bring back my friend's 4-yr-old son. Yet thanks to the law, the owners of the Boxers got a stern lecture, had their dogs put down, and they now own a new Boxer. Tammy is the one who will forever pay the price of someone else's "oopsie".

Is the Welsh Corgi the exact same breed as the Cardigan Corgi?
There is no breed called a "Welsh Corgi" or a "Cardigan Corgi". There is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

So if on the news, it is shown that an 85 lb blue "pit bull" with floppy flews and a dewlap to write home about and some ginormous splayed paws attacked someone, I'm supposed to say, "Yup! That dog is just like my Coco. Identical almost.". Nevermind that Coco is 38 lbs when rolypoly fat, has no loose skin, and has nice little feet with toes in proper position. Why on earth do I need to make such a claim?
i really just don't understand this response. maybe i'm missing something.

I realized my mistake after I typed it. Sorry. Since I'm typing on my phone, I don't have an edit option (for some reason).

But on the other hand, that's a small example of breed misidentification a d confusion that surrounds the "pit bull" breeds every day.

LOL my old username said Pibble in it. I don't see anything wrong with it, I never even thought about it this way. I've always called them that at my work just because I talk to my dogs in a baby voice. I really don't see a problem with it and having a problem with it sounds kind of petty. It's just a nickname. And if people think it makes them two different breeds or whatever other reason they may come up with to misunderstand or discrimate against the breed than they are idiots and they need to do more research before they judge.

I don't have a problem with the name, except that it's too cutesy for my personal taste. The implications of the name don't bother me either. I'd far rather APBTs be viewed as cuddly, adorable squishy-wishie doggie-woggies instead of ferocious, jaw-locking childkillers that deserve to be killed en masse. :dunno:

Besides, I doubt that no matter how cutesy-wootsy they make ABPTs sound, I don't think we need worry about them becoming the next trend in designer pursedogs. It would take a real marketing genius to sell something with the name "pibblepoo." That sounds like a bodily function to me. :rofl1:

I find it strange that Pibble is thought of as a cutesy name for the breed. It's what many of the locals here call them and well....I can guarantee you they aren't doing it to be cutesy or improve the image of the breed. In my mind, Pibble and Rockwyla sort of go together. I have called dogs Pibbles in a joking way because of that.

It annoys me in the same way women refer to their husbands as "hubby". I really don't have an explanation for this, it just seriously makes my eye twitch.

I find it annoying when its an adult... I heard a little kid explaining to a lady the other day that "Pibbles aren't dangerous, its people who make 'em that way," he couldn't have been more than six, and it was the cutest thing I'd EVER seen, he was sitting there cuddling a red nosed pittie, and the lady was lecturing his mother on how that dog would kill her son.

I am seriously wondering why people feel that way. It's just...stupid.
Because "Pibble" is stupid. Don't call my dogs pibbles.. it reminds me of pebble, or "piddle" (like peeing). It's not endearing or cute, at all.

And a lot of the time, the people that refer to their dogs as "pibbles" are what I refer to as "fur mommies".. those people who think that Fluffy would NEVER do anything wrong, and treat their dogs like children. Blah. Drives me nuts.

I don't mind if other people use it, but it's one of those words I personally feel like an idiot saying. It's too... cartoony or something.

I usually use "bully" for that generic, "pit bull type but probably not purebred but I don't know exactly what it is" type dog.

Yeah I refer to Wilson & Piper as Pit Bull mixes. Or Bully breeds. Just depends on my mood.

From a girl who had a BAD lisp and dyslexia as a kid... I probably said pibble lol but now that I'm old enough to know what the proper word sounds like, I am reformed.
That said, I don't blame kids for saying it. It's just easier, goes right along with "H I J K ELEMENOPEE" lol
I think baby talk has it's time and place. When talking TO my own dog, I of course call him a CHI-HOO-A-HOO-A or MIDGET DOG and make fun of him.. but I would never try to blanked the term for the entire breed (or even use the term in public.. lol)

I was reminded of this thread today because I heard somebody at the park say

"Pibbles are those nice bully dogs with the normal ears. Pitbulls have their ears cut, those are the fighting ones"

Living in Miami (a place where people are pretty ignorant because pitbulls are illegal) I can see the danger with using this term.
The whole ears cropped=fighting mean dog and ears not cropped= nice dog. Is something I hear ALL THE TIME (at the shelter, park, etc..) and it doesn't surprise me that people are using the name to kind of make two different breeds.

Oh my lord. So I have 2 Pibbles and a Pit Bull :rofl1:

I wonder if people realize that most dog fighters DON'T crop their dogs ears.

I've reached the point where I'll refer to the type as "Pitbulls" but usually remark that "pitbull" isn't a breed. I've even been known to bite my tongue when some dork starts bragging to me about his 100 lb. "pitbull." But not often. ;)

When I'm referring to Tallulah I use "American Pit Bull Terrier," "Pit Bull Terrier" or "APBT." The last nearly always leads to having to go back to "American Pit Bull Terrier" though.
