Brindle colour horses!

I was reading an article in Equus the other day about brindle colour horses. First of all, I didn't know they existed! According to the article there are something like 5 million horses registered with the AQHA (quarter horse assoc.) and only 17 are brindle. So a guy was trying to find out more of the genetics on brindle horses. He bought a brindle mare and bred it to a brindle stud.

The horse did not come out brindle. He bred her again and it didn't come out brindle again. BUT when he went to register the foal he sent in hair samples and was told that the foal was not genetically related to it's father or mother

This suprised the guy who knew it had to be the dam's foal. he sent in samples of her dna again and they found out that her dam has two types of dna. So, curious, he sent in the sire's dna again this time with several specimens and found out that the sire ALSO had two types of DNA. this is really rare so it was quite amazing.

He still doesn't know that much about brindle horses but has concluded that horse with two types of dna may or may not be brindle BUT brindle horses have two types of dna. Therefore, it's not something you can breed for. Weird, eh?

I've seen that brindle thumbnail on Eqqus before, but never really followed it. It's neat and bizarre at the same time...the first thouht that always pops into my head is "How easy would it be to coordinate your dog and horse now!? A brindle Boxer and a brindle horse and BOOM! Cover of "Good Housekeeping". "

I had heard of brindle horses as well, and had skimmed that same information that you wrote. It is all very weird.

That is wild--someone wrote two books --one called Riding Lessons and one called Flying changes (family drama type--a little soap opera like, but not too bad..) The horse in the story is a brindle Hanoverian--after reading the books I looked some brindle horses up on the internet--some are really neat--I'm also a big fan of some Grulla colored horses--not quite as rara as brindles though for sure!

I love Grulla colored horses and those brindles are beautiful

i dont know it jsut doesnt seem natural to me lol. i know it is but i mean its just you dont really see them in the wild. but they are pretty.
