How do you guys feel about shipping puppies. Just the shipping part.

I am considering flying out to a breeder. And then flying back. And then having the puppy either brought back with me or having it flown back after wards. Either way its being shipped on a plane. Do puppies do alright? Is this a bad idea?

Also thanks for the link, i found a chapter thats about 40 minutes away

Its not a bad idea to have a dog shipped, and even better if you can go with him and bring him back with you. I'd really get him shipped with you, there have been some stories that people have gotten another dog shipped than the one they originally picked out.

With a reputable breeder this isnt even a problem but theres no such thing as being too careful

Good luck with your search!

I just wanted to add that you would be better off getting the pup shipped with you, you'll save some money. If the pup is traveling by itself its much more expensive

About shipping, it is much better to fly home w i t h puppy. That way, on most airlines, you can keep him in the cabin with you, inside of a crate. There is also no chance of the puppy being mis-handled, forgotten, etc.

I think there have already been a lot of good posts about over-sized breeding, but my opinion is definitely to stay away from that. Rotties are not supposed to be 250 lbs, breeding dogs that large, there are bound to be represcussions - either temperamentally, conformationally, higher risk of joint diseases, etc. You should absolutely require your breeder to show their dogs & preferably exhibit them in working trials, because that proves their breeding dogs worth. Even if you want a "pet" puppy, 9 out of 10 times most of a litter from Champion parents will be pet quality. Along with proving their dogs to be great examples of the breed through showing, you should also require extensive health tests of both parents. You really want a healthy, temperamentally sound, beautiful Rottie, so it is not worth the heart-break and trouble going to an illegitimate breeder.

I mentioned my shipping earlier . I would only do it with a direct flight and not in extremely hot or cold weather. Mine was between Indianapolis and Denver . Most of mine were pickups ..... 3 from Florida !! Others were mid west and eastern states. My first golden puppy , we picked up in Conn and took into Quebec.

No problem about the link - most clubs are only too happy to welcome another member into the fold, and you'll surely meet some great breeders, and make new friends along the way.

Flying out to meet the breeder personally is a fantastic idea. They'll know you're serious about acquiring a quality pup, and you'll be able to get a good look at the kind of situation the puppies are raised in. You'll also be able to meet the dam of your future puppy- a BIG plus.

As far as shipping- I know several breeders who have done it, and most have done so with no problems whatsoever. Being in Shibas, we work with a LOT of import dogs- (my own breeder has imported several from Japan), and I haven't heard any horror stories. I know of other breeders who have exported to as far away as the Netherlands and Australia.

(Of course, bad things *can* happen...case in point, Vivi the Westminster BOB whippet who was lost by airport personnel and is STILL on the run). Incidents like this are in the minority though, and most breeders take great precautions to ensure that no disasters occur. Grammy mentioned that she only used direct flights and avoided weather extremes- this is right on target. I would expect any other good breeder to do the same.

I was unaware that i could do that...i def like that idea better than just shipping it. It makes me feel alot more comfortable.

May I also add , that a good breeder would get the proper crate early and get the pup accustomed to it . I also sent him with the scents on a towel he was used to . I know, overdid things !!! I was an hr. 1/2 from the airport , got there 2 hours early , to make sure all was set, pot and love on the pup. As soon as the pups cage went into cargo area... I raced into the terminal ( pre 9/11 days ) and waited until I saw his kennel go on the plane.... then waited until they were in the air and raced home for the " he's here ! " call. ( pre cell phone days ! ) Wonder why I'm grey ??? It wasn't just from my 2 leggers !
