My thought was greyhound, too.

The problem is so many large breed dogs (70+) are going to come with health issues :( I think a smooth coated st bernard fits everything you want really well, but they have lots of health issues.

My only concern about getting a large dog for cuddle purposes, with a greyhound, is they're BONEY. Cuddling up to a big squish newf is a lot more comfy than snuggling up to the 36 elbows greyhounds seem to have.

Well, I'm pretty much completely sold on a greyhound. I know, I was SO HARD to convince! I just have always loved sighthounds and I think out of all of them a greyhound fits what I'm looking for best.

I love Ibizans but they're more energy than I'm looking for right now I think. Without sounding callous I want a dog that won't really take the place of a Koolie while still being an awesome dog that I can do stuff with but I don't need to schedule in daily physical and mental exercise. That can just hang out with me and cuddle but still be a fun, happy temperament.

I've been poking around and researching today. I've sent off a couple emails but it seems there isn't a ton of Greyhound breeders on the web when you first start looking. Ideally I would like a breeder that hunts, courses or does sports of some sort. Seems it's going to be quite a hunt.

How soon will this happen? Cause I'm super psyched. :D A rescued racing Grey named Amber is the reason I love sighthounds so much and is part of the reason I hope to have a Whippet (AND someday a retired racer). They are awesome dogs.

Contact Never Say Never Greyhounds. She's got a website and a blog and she just got a puppy (well, I say just but it's been quite a few months ago) from a breeder in Texas. She also works with SEGA and may be able to point you to a good rescue.

So I got in contact with a breeder who's been giving me a ton of information and has given me a lot of different people to talk to. I love how you get through one door and a bunch of others open up!

Not for a good while, I just like to plan way in advance

Thanks! I would prefer a breeder but might be worth contacting her to ask about the breeder she went through!

Greys are such sweet dogs <3 And I agree with what was said about Ibizan's they can be pretty high energy especially young ones! And you won't find many that hit 70lbs! And depending on bloodlines, these guys can be SSA.

Yeah, I really really like Ibizan's but I think what I'm looking for would be fit better by a greyhound like you said.

Also, ugh. Already got "yelled" at for looking at breeders and not rescues. ADOPT DON'T SHOP!11!1

I first thought Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, as the one I knew sounds just like what you're looking for. He was big, easy going, friendly and very affectionate. He was more athletic that a lot of Berners too - both in build/aesthetically and in physical ability. I would imagine they can have some health concerns, but I don't think they're as common or severe as some of the BMD issues.

A Greyhound sounds like an awesome fit though!!
