It kind of bugs me when people (in the US at least) refer to Brittanys as Brittany Spaniels. The "spaniel" was dropped in '82 - I think that half the people calling them "Brittany Spaniels" weren't even alive when that was the name!

Otherwise there aren't a ton of nicknames for my breeds. Brittanys are either Brittanys or Brits/Britts, Cardigan Welsh Corgis are Cardigans, Cardis, CWCs... I guess I'm not crazy about the "corgi with a tail" thing, because I feel like that implies that's the only difference between Pems and Cardis. But for most people who will never own one or anything, that is the quickest way to differentiate. Unless you live somewhere that bans docking!

"Pibbles" drives me nuts.

Yeah, I hate pibbles and pitties and all that ****.

And yes, using nose color as the first thing to describe and APBT is a great indicator of a BYB. Take that with a grain of salt, though. A lot of bulldog people still refer to rednose a lot, because there is a bloodline called the OFRN-Old Family Red Nose. But when they use the term it's a description, like "I've got a helluva pup from my last litter, rednose, lots of flash" Or, "You know I've always loved a rednose dog. My favorite pigment, for sure." Not the typical BYB slang-"Rare red and bluenose puppies for sale!!!"

I like the nickname for my breed, Amstaff. It's a lot easier than the full breed name. Although the general public doesn't know either lol.

Aussie :) which I quite like really...not sure why with all the other Australian ____ breeds, Australian shepherds (primarily) got the nickname, but I think it's cute.
Although I like the pronunciation AU-SEE and not OZZIE, which I've heard.

I also generally don't like the term "doxie"for dachshunds..../I'm pretty sure I've heard people say it's slang for a prostitute in some countries.

Heeler doesn't bother me except when I see "xyz dog is an Australian Cattle Dog/Heeler mix". And I sit there and wonder if they are saying ACD/Heeler mixed with something else, or if they think it is an ACD mixed with a 'heeler'.

ACDs are not Aussies, either. Australian Shepherds are the only breed permitted to be called an Aussie. :p

"Collie" for Border Collie....It's just confusing. When I hear Collie I think of Rough/Smooth Lassie style Collie.
In the UK, I do believe all Border Collies are Collies, period. It's not just slang, they aren't 'border' collies there. This is what I've gathered from acquaintances on forums from the UK :). It is confusing here though.

Yes, indeed. Border Collies are just Collies there.

I can't stand when people call border collies border or collie. I don't mind BC.

Ibizans are called beezers a lot and I actually really like that one.

English Shepherds just get ESs, or breed enthusiasts sometimes affectionately call them English Shadows. Both are fine by me :) I use ES a lot because it's so much easier to type out, especially on my phone - although sometimes I do a double take when I see ESS (for English Springer) now!

I have this hatred against the word "Heeler". They aren't a "heeler", they are an Australian Cattle Dog. I feel like it's a swear word. Lol. Also, if you misspell it, I will disown you as a human being.

I obviously understand where the term comes from, but it irks me. Also, when they use color: "Oh you have a blue heeler? I have a red heeler!". No. Just no. You have an Australian Cattle Dog who is blue/red. Pick one. And that purple heeler crap? Yeah, just stop.

Anybody else have nicknames for their breed that they hate?
OH MY GOD I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE! I hate heeler. Especially in reference to a dog who is a registered ACD or one who is very obviously purebred - "heeler" doesn't really bother me if it's a mix or something.

It irks me too and I am always very careful to say that Dally is an ACD.

I hate when people call GSD's "German"s or Malinois "Belgian"s. As in, "Is she a purebred German/Belgian?" Drives me nuts for some stupid reason.
I hear Belgians a lot when people are talking about multiple varieties at once.

Germans just sounds stupid.

Mal - because I live in Alaska, and we have lots of Malamutes and very few Malinois, but when I come online it's the opposite and both are just called Mals all the time, and my brain is too small for that.

You can't really shorten Shar Pei much, but I have heard people pronounce it as "Sharpie," which always throws me. One guy said it about ten million times, "that's a Shar-pee mix, I just know it! Total Shar-pee." Stop, you're killing me!

Breed slang names and cutesie nicknames don't tend to bother me though. Aussies, pitties, heelers, pibbles...Dobermans have the Dober- prefix a lot (Doberbitches, Doberpuppies, Doberbutts), and I love it. I've heard of a Pei puppy as a "Peiby." :rofl1:

Some people seem really, really bothered by the UK use of Alsatian for a GSD - never understood why.

Finnish Spitz = Finkie(s)

Or FS for short.

Sometimes they are called Finns, but Finns makes me think of Finnish people so yeah. I don't use that one.

Basically just repeating what everyone has said before. I'm not really bothered much by how people shorten 'border collie,' but 'collie' is kind of confusing because I always think of rough/smooth collies. 'Border' I think of border terrier. Sometimes I'll type BC because I'm lazy and it's shorter. :p

I used to mostly call Sally a 'collie,' never really bothered to say 'rough collie' in casual conversation.

Seamus is just a mutt which I don't find offensive or anything either. :p I never bother to say 'mixed breed,' it's easier to say 'mutt.'

Also, I reserve the right to call Malinois mals because I don't trust myself to spell it correctly on a regular basis. :rofl1:

I don't care for pibble. Otherwise I don't think there are any I don't like.

Alaskan huskies are usually just called Alaskans. That's the only slang that applies to any of mine unless you count made-up names like plottahoula.

Just don't call Lucy a bichpoo and we're good.

I don't mind cutesy names and whatnot. I say pitties and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Otherwise, in a real conversation lol I usually just use actual breed names.... online I might type Dobe or Dobie, but speaking I always say Doberman, for example.

I get confused about why people always, always, always specify the color of their labradors, but meh.

It's irrational, but I hate the term "Duck Toller" and "Nova Scotia Retriever". The latter just sounds ridiculous and is not the breed's nickname and the former just sounds weird and annoying to me. I like either the entire breed name or just "Toller".

For Dobermans, I hate "Dobie" and "Dob" and "Pinscher". They all drive me a little nuts. It's Doberman or Dobe. Dobie is ok I guess, but it still irrationally bugs me a bit haha.

I haven't really heard any weird Aussie nicknames. Except if people accidentally call them heelers or cattledogs. I find it weird when people call them "shepherds" though. To me, a shepherd is a GSD.

Pit
Pittie
Pibble

Ew. Gross. Kill me now! I hate them all but just plain, "pit," gets on my nerves so much! The breed is American Pit Bull Terrier. It's already shortened to "Pit Bull," are you that lazy that you have to shorten it again? A pit what? Arm pit? Fire pit? If you can't be bothered to write out or say pit bull, just say APBT. Boom. Easy peasy!

Also, it's pit bull. With a space. Not one word. Pit *space* Bull.

Rant over. :)
