Just for kicks and giggles, I wanted to ask what you guys think of Buddha, my best friend's dog. I always go back and forth on my guesses for him. My friend got him from the SPCA at three months old, where he was surrendered by someone with no knowledge of his parents. He's a big boy, about 100 lbs. I love this dog so much - he's a big derp and not always the brightest thing on four legs, but he's such a love.

Pictures - sorry I don't have a side shot of him.

Baby Buddha (the ears!)

And just for fun - Cricket about to get run over by the impending giant red wall of doom. Buddha never really realizes how wide the stick in his mouth is, so if you're not careful he'll whack you in the legs with it.

That fourth picture, the more closeup of the side of his face, makes his face look really rottie. Just has that rottie expression. Maybe lab/rott? The color doesn't make sense to me for that, though.

His face looks like my neighbors... They call him a lab but I think he's mixed with something. So lab mix is my guess.

I'd guess ridgeback/lab too. But I DO see the rottie resemblance in the face.

According to google, these are ridgeback/lab mixes:

I knew a Lab x Rottie who looked just like him! :) He's super cute. I'd say that or Lab x Mastiff. RR x Rottie would make sense for the color... and could be possible if they're common in your area.

He's adorable. Put me down for rottie mix of some sort. Black and tan is pretty recessive so it's not hard to get away from.

ETA: he has ridgeback ears in his puppy pictures. <3

First picture had me thinking Rott/Lab. As I scrolled down, I got to thinking he could be all Lab, tho (the color is a shade of yellow called Fox Red).

If I ran into him out on the street I'd probably guess a really big Lab with some Rottie or mastiff-type mixed in somewhere along the line. Don't see Labs with heads that blocky outside the show circuit very often, and his has a heavier feel to it than I would expect to see from any Lab.

Danish Mastiff. Duh.
Oh, of course :) Why didn't I think of that?

Thanks for the guesses, guys! I'd actually never thought about him having any Rottie, but I could totally see it now that you've pointed it out! I think he could definitely have some Lab too, though I don't think he's all Lab - he just has this big, powerful, lumbering quality that I've never seen in a Lab, even the massive byb ones. You could be spot on with the coloring, though, his coat very much resembles the fox red Labs I've seen.

I agree with Ridgeback mix. In some of those pictures, he looks really jowl-y, which makes me guess away from Lab and more towards Mastiff. Or maybe Newfie, the long coat is recessive so a Newfie/Ridgeback cross would have short hair.

Or maybe some hound? I knew a bloodhound mix that had that "lumbering" quality. Maybe bloodhound/lab?

Wow! I had a black Lab/Rottweiler mix who looked just like him, except he was black!! The similarities are freakish! lol Looking at his head, and even the expression in his eyes, is like looking at Bob all over again!
