Well now I can't get it to work. Here is the gist of it...

On the news tonight there was a report on retractable leashes. People are having their fingers severred. They interviewed a woman who said she was walking her dog when he saw something and started running she couldn't pull him back with the leash and ended up falling, when she fell her dog stopped and she looked down and saw her finger on the sand, Dr's were unable to reattach her finger. I guess this was the 3rd case of someones finger being severed from a retractable leash in Massachusetts in the last month.

The link was to a newspaper article about another severing. I will try to find it on the web.

This one will work.

I have already had my leg burned by these things in the past. I still have one but only use it in the woods.

Hmmm I didnt give that a whole lot of thought when I made leash for my fila, when he gets here. I just used nylon climbing rope...may need to consider gloves when he gets big

I've never seen a nylon one before. Mine has flat nylon for about 1 foot and then it is the rope. Where can you get the other ones at?

Mine has a couple feet of regular leash material, then its a nylon cord. I learned quick not to ever grab it on that cord part. You can get burnt easily even by a little dog. I can see how a finger could be lost.

Ummm... excuse me if I'm being dense. But the whole idea of a "retractable" leash is that the cord is all contained within a hard plastic casing for the hand to hold. So, that tells me some idiots are wrapping the cord around their fingers/hands outside of the hard plastic holder. We can't make everything in this world idiot-proof. Yet I'll bet there's a lawsuit on the way

Yep, people can be dense alright. I got a burn from one on my leg before and it really hurt, left a nice scar. It wasn't me...I was dense enough to stand close to someone that had their dog on one and the dog took off pulling her forward and my leg was in the way.

People also let their dogs run from them until the end of the leash which is dangerous. When I was at Petsmart, a lady came out with her dog on a retractable leash. The dog ran and the lease broke. When I used to use one, I didn't let my dogs go too far from me.

I used mine when I'd take Jake to the park. It was great for training him to do his basic commands outside where he had enough length to be distracted but not enough that he could get away. As a result of that training, he can now go to the park, get off the leash and have my trust while we walk around.
