The Reason It Is Called Flat Coated Is Because The Greek Word Flate' Meaning Black In English, And The Word Coated Meaning "all Or Whole" In Other Words The Entire Body. :)
i've never heard such a thing.

flatties come in black or liver and the "flat coated" refers to the fact that their coat is lying flat on the body as opposed to being fluffy, wavy etc.

another lesser known breed is the curly coated retriever, which also comes in black and liver. (way cool dogs, there was one in my last obedience class group.)

Curly coated retreivers- are they the same breed as the nova scotia duck tolling retreivers, or are they a seperate breed?

No they are a seperate breed. Heres some information:

Retriever (Curly-coated)

origin: One of the oldest of the retriever breeds, the Curly has appeared in British sporting prints dating back 300 years. He was the first breed trained to retrieve game and deliver it back to the hunter. Because he was a 'finished' breed long before breeding records were kept, his actual ancestry is a matter of conjecture. Educated guesses place the St. John's Newfoundland, the Poodle, the Old English Water Spaniel and the Irish Water Spaniel in his background. At one time the Curly was the gamekeeper's favourite dog and it is still regarded as the most efficient retriever in New Zealand and Australia, where it is worked on upland game as well as waterfowl. The Curly's popularity was eclipsed by the Labrador and Golden Retrievers but it still maintains a faithful following around the world.

Temperament: A charming and gentle family companion, the Curly is self-confident, steadfast and intelligent. Independent and poised, the dog is alert but calm and affectionate.

Activity level: A determined and durable hunter, the courageous Curly is both eager and persistent. The breed is best suited to suburban or country living and needs plenty of outdoor exercise. And if that includes swimming, your Curly will love you for it.

Height/Weight: The ideal height at the withers ranges from 25-27 in (64-69 cm) for males and 23-25 in (58-64 cm) for females.

Coat: The body coat is a thick mass of close-lying small, tight and crisp curls.

Colour: The Curly may be black or liver in colour.

Grooming: An occasional bath and towelling down is all the grooming required.

Now really i am an expert on flatcoats and flat coated retrievers do not come in a liver color otherwise it would be called a black amber which originates from novascotcia. But a curly haired puppy is usually born from a black amber with a curly haired coat or a flat coat with a curly haired coat. Some of the litter of the coat could be flat or curly so there would be a mix!
If you would like to learn more info. Message me @ [email protected] and i would be happy to give you some info or just put up another quick reply with a question and i will be more than happy to answer it! thank you

here are some standards for flatties:

FCI (world canine organization)
"COLOUR - Black or liver only."

AKC
"Color Solid black or solid liver. Disqualification -- Yellow, cream or any color other than black or liver."

UKC
"Color Black or liver."

i don't quite understand what you are trying to say in your second paragraph tho. curly coated and flat coated retrievers are two distinct breeds and i have never heard the term "black amber" associated with either of them nor seen it in any breed standards.

well black ambers are only found in either novascotia or greenland where they are also thought to be a Newfoundland but they are different in a lot of ways! black ambers are very unusual and very expensive to buy!

Black is dominant, therefore is not at all likely to "hide" for generations. I would think a golden mom with black pups was bred to something other then a golden.

solid black is not mentioned in the breed standard, so I suspect it does not occur in purebred Golden Retrievers.

Isn't black recessive?
Or is it different for different breeds?

well all im trying to say is that flat coats can be found in only the western hemisphere of the world. Since i am from the UK i have to have my dogs shipped over seas. Flat coats seem to learn how to "settle" there faster but i've really never been to the united states. I was wondering if anyone would be able to send me a brief message, telling me what dog shows are like there? thank you.

when we too rory for her vet ceck on monday she told us about a lady whos cat had a litter a month ago or so. there were 9 kittens, guess how many dads/sires??? :) 9. they looked different enough from each other and their mom that the owner had a dna test done. since dna cant tell breed, they dont know who the dads all are but the test did prove each one had a different father.
Wow that's crazy! (crazy as in weird) her cat sure had a night on the town I can tell you that much. :D 9 dadies. Man.....that is hard to even think about. That means she was mated NINE times during her heat cycle. Gosh, that lady musta just let her cat ROAM and ROAM and ROAM. *shakes head*

Isn't black a dominant gene? If so it cannot skip generations. Unlike recessive genes, dominant genes need only one copy of the gene to show the trait, whereas recessives need a matched pair.

In German Shepherds, black is the least dominat color:

There are 4 main color alleles for GSDS.

In order of dominant to recessive.
Sable
Black & Tan
Bi-Color
Black

I don't know what that means to other breeds, but in the GSD black is recessive
