Nancy . . . . . what would we do without you here? :)
I just get worried when mom's take their babies home at 24 hours because truly... sometimes the jaundice doesn't show up that quick. And if left untreated.. it can be very dangerous to the baby. I don't feel she's up at a "dangerous" level from that picture, but if she's not breastfeeding real good and pooping it out, it can certainly go up higher. I just wanted to make sure she put her in the sunlight until she can get her to the pediatrician to have that bili level drawn.

You give these new mothers so much good info that they SHOULD be getting from their doctors - but don't. And you impart it in layman's language so it can be understood . . . that almost NEVER happens.

Awww what a cute dress.... the little baby underwear that goes under dresses always cracks me up. They are just so cute.

and I agree with puppydog... she does look just like her dad.

As for the hair maybe lightening up... don't be surprised if she loses it too lol. That happens sometimes. Hannah didn't have much hair to begin with but what she does have she is losing and it's turning red

did you get to weigh her before you left the hospital? what was her discharge weight? just curious :D

Hehehe, My niece was born with COAL BLACK hair and it was AT LEAST 3 inches long all over her head. When she got to about 5 months old her hair was visibly changing to blonde...........at the ROOTS! So she had Blonde hair with black tips for the longest time, she was our little punk rock baby! LOL

I say Beverly's hair could definitely go blonde..........and wouldn't it be REALLY cool if it went the same way MY OTHER niece did? :D

Oh I was born with long black hair too.........but then it changed to my reddish brown (that I help along to be more red ;))

I didn't even see your post below that cute pic of her sleeping on breeze. Your computer screen isn't messed up.. she's jaundiced. Since breeze got to go home in 24 hours.. jaundice doesn't usually get stated until that time frame. It peaks at about 3-4 days and then should start to come down.

Breeze... get her clothes off and put her in a sunny window several times a day.. just be sure not to let her get too cold, keep the room warm for her. Is she pooping and peeing? Get her to nurse more often if you can. The quicker she starts pooping that bilirubin out the quicker her level will come down.

I would most definately make sure she has an appointment with the pediatrician soon to make sure her bili level isn't up too high. If I had to guess.. I'd say she's around 10 or 12 right now. Giver her a big smooch from all of us chazzers... she's so cute![/QUOTE]

this was my worry Nancy--working with kids with developmental issues, I am all too aware of what jaundice can do if left untreated! I'd say pediatrician follow up very soon!--call if needed to push it sooner than they usually schedule--you don't want this to get out of control.

She is the splitting image of her father.
I like her dark hair.
So do I. And yea she is.
her hair may not stay dark. Mom said mine got lighter each time she washed it! I ended up a honey blonde for my childhood.
mine was strawberry blonde when i was born.
her asleep

DoneShe is just beautiful Breeze! I do have one comment/question for you. I don't know if it is my computer screen--so sorry if this is odd. Her skin in this picture looks like it has a yellow color to it--does she look that way at home? I just wouldn't want her to become jaundiced--do you see the pediatrician any time soon? If she is yellow looking, you want to have her looked at so that can be treated. Just want everything to be ok for you!
She is a little jaundiced and was diagnosed at the hospital and she saw the pediatrician again today. And he said just let her spend sometime in the sunlight eachday.

Hey breeze.... did they check her bilirubin level before she left the hospital?
Is that part of the PKU? What test is it? not sure.

OOOOOOOHHHHH shes pooping lol. She averages 4-5 dirty diapers a day so far and my milk came in this morningso that should help right? And they just measured her and gave her a hep. b shot today is that right?

just want to let you know incase no one told you lol... don't be alarmed if she eventually stops pooping everyday. she may only poop every other day or every two days. Hannah did this when she was breastfed... actually still does. The Dr said that is totally normal. some babies systems are just so efficient and processing the nutrients that there is almost no waste. So don't worry if she doesn't poop one day... unless she seems like she is in a lot of pain.

Sorry I didn't get back to your questions.. I had to work last night and I work again tonight. The PKU is just a blood sample we take to screen for metabolic disorders..etc.. has nothing to do with the bilirubin level. It's mandated in each state that a PKU must be done.. at least I think it's mandated in each state. We usually do them the day they go home.

The bilirubin level is a usually a blood test.. but we got this nifty little gadget that we just press on their forehead and it measures the amount of bilirubin in their blood without even sticking them.. it's neat and saves them from being poked.

Jaundice is just the break down of old red blood cells in the blood. It gets excreted in the stool... (they poop the excess red blood cells out) If your milk is in that will help because the more volume she takes in the more she will stool. The bilirubin level usually peaks around the 3rd day.. meaning it's at it's highest level. You should start to see her level drop to a normal range relatively quick. It's when their level gets up in the 20's that we are concerned because it can lead to very bad things.

If her doctor just said to put her in the sunlight then her bili is probably not that high. Did they happen to tell you what her level was? I'm sure they will want to follow up and check her bili level again in a day or two.. depending on how high it was and how yellow she still looks. Is the sclera in her eyes yellow (the white part of the eye is the sclera)

And you're probably right about the HBV shot she got. We give all our babies one before they go home. That is the hepatitis vaccine and she will need to get 2 more doses of it. Your pediatrician will tell you when to schedule those because they give them at certain time frames. I wanna say the next one is in about a month and then the last one in about 6 months.. but don't quote me on that.. ask your pediatrician to be sure.

I think I answered the questions you had.. if I forgot something just leave me a message and I'll try and answer it before I go to work tonight.
