That disappointing moment when your LFS keeps their bettas in worse conditions than the chain stores. Don't carry any tanks under 20 gallons and only have like four varieties of heaters all wildly overpriced.

I hate that, Amber :(

My favorite LFS closed while I was taking a hiatus and I'm really bummed. The woman who ran it was very old, I hope she didn't die or something.

I did end up walking out with a pretty multicolor boy who is mostly purple/lavender. But yeah, not super thrilled right now. To top things off they were super unfriendly, so YAY /sarcasm

And his home for now.

He's currently getting acclimated now that the water is at temp.

10 years ago, I had a collection of bettas. My first was my favorite, and we went through a lot together, including his bout with cancer. Once they all died, I was betta-less for several years. A few years ago, I felt I really wanted another betta, and I bypassed some gorgeous little guys in favor of a weak, dull looking yellowish guy who seemed to have a personality like that of my rock star betta of old. While not the flashy butterfly/mustard gassy style I have always been drawn to, he was a pretty thing in his own right once he got settled in a clean, heated tank. I lost him this winter, and I don't know when I'll get another.

He's been dead for a few years now, but this was Alpha, the coolest, most personable fish I've ever known!

He was an absolute riot. He's not dead or dying in this picture, he's just sleeping...DRAPPED OVER a leaf! LOL

Amber what kind of tank/heater do you use?
Fred is in a 5 gallon tank, it was a glofish kit that included filter (I ended up buying a less powerful filter), hood, and a tetra 50w preset heater.

Sirius Black and unnamed boy are in a divided 10 gallon. It's just a regular 10 gallon tank, I'm also running a tetra 50w preset heater in their tank.

The babies are in one gallon growout tanks in my bathroom which rather than have heaters in I perform climate control on my bathroom to keep the water temp at a constant 80 degrees.

All that being said, I will be upgrading to better adjustable heaters before next winter.

... I want one. Boyfriend is not convinced as it takes way too many water changes to be an easy tank pet. Does the proper filter cut down on that at all?

A cycled tank doesn't require a huge amount of water changes. Until you're tank is cycle water changes are pretty frequent and how long it takes a tank to cycle varies.

New rescue EE boy, he's in pretty sorry shape and I have no idea if he'll pull through, but I'm going to give it all I got.

This is what he looked like on the store shelf and most of the ride home.

Getting acclimated:

His cup days are over!

Any good vibes for him appreciated!

Well, my guy died today :(

I had him for 2.5 years, which is the longest I've ever had a fish. He was already big with long fins when I got him (and he never grew any more) so he knows how old he was. I'm guessing he died of old age, because these past couple of months he's just been slowing down, not swimming as much, having a hard time seeing his food, things like that. I am sad.

I'm going to go to the local pet store today and see what bettas they have. It sucks looking at an empty tank.

I'm sorry, Paige :( It's always crummy. I hope the petstore has something nice to help you feel better.

Amber, how is the new dude doing?
