He's still hanging in their Julee! I let him chill in the dark last night after I got him set up so he didn't get too stressed on top of everything else. He was hanging out on the bottom when I get up for work this morning, but going up for air, etc. it would appear that one side of his gills suffered more damage than the other so we'll see how that goes. I actually just got off the phone with my boyfriend who said he thinks he looks a bit better than yesterday and seems to be spending more time near the top of his tank.

What does everyone recommend for filtration? I had my last beta in a heated, filtered 5 gallon and he really seemed to like it but the filter was too strong and was not adjustable.

Lupin's tank doesn't have a filter. Berta's tank has a... smallworld? Maybe? Something I bought at Walmart for like $6. :p

Previously, he had a Whisper filter that came with his tank, and I put it on low. I just found it was too large/took up too much room.

You can always baffle more powerful filters as well!

Check out sponge filters, you can adjust how many bubbles they produce really easily.

    *huge iphone pictures, sorry!*

I picked this halfmoon up from PetSmart the other day. He is super pretty, I wish I could get a good picture of him. I'll try to get some better ones when I get a black background for my tank, because right now it's in front of a mirror, so pictures look awful. I have no idea what his color is called. He's a really pretty shade of blue with a white/red edge on his tail and red pelvic fins.

Thanks! I am going to look now . We got my son a Betta for his birthday last month and between that and this thread I have figured out what to do with the 20 gallon left over from when my Hermit Crab kicked it a couple months ago.

You guys made me want bettas! I ended up getting two makes and a female :). And I set up 2 more tanks to keep everyone safe as well. I put a 20gal up and moved my Kribensis into it with my one gourami because they are all mean jerks lol. So that this little guy will be able to grow his tail back:

He has a spade tail and he is just freaking cute.

And then I saw this guy and gal and had to have them, so I set up my 5gal for them...at midnight when I got home from the city, lol.

It's not a good idea to keep a male and female together unless spawning - I'd split the tank or get one more!

I have never had a problem before, but if it becomes a problem I'll remove him, it's not a problem :)

I second what Julee said. They should only be together for spawning. Your girl is already showing some serious signs of stress.

Why were you keeping the betta with the kribs if he was getting munched on? :(

If you're going to be continuing unsafe practices, please do not post about them here. I don't want people new to the hobby to think that's ever okay to be doing, it's not. No different than leaving two dogs that have fought before alone together... except, y'know. Fins.

He was only in there while I set up their tank, because he had been in a bag for 6 hours on our way back from the city. Once their tank was set up they were removed, as was the gourami, and now he is in a 45gal tank with some angels, a school of tetras, one Molly, a school of danios and some armoured catfish. In the 2 hours it took to set up their tank and the 5gal for the other bettas he managed to get out of the breeding trap and a Krib nipped his tail.

I had all of their filters running on my big tank for 3 weeks before I set up these new tanks so that they had biological filter media ready to go, so that when I got the tanks and fish home I would be able to set them up. I also have been doing watch tests twice a day for the last week to watch for ammonia or nitrite spikes for the last week (when they were set up) now I'm doing them daily, and will continue for another week.

And if you're wondering why my fish had to travel 6 hours it's because the only place here that sells fish is a craphole and I refuse to shop there. They sell small animals that come from Hagen, they also breed some of their own in a windowless dank dirty little room, but only ones they can make big money on, like short tailed possums, because they can sell each one for $300. Then they also take in people animals that they can't keep and turn around and re-sell them. The very last time I was in there it was ferrets, they were asking $350 each, one was 2, one was 5 and the last was 7, yep they were asking $350 for a 7 year old ferret, so I import my fish because I won't step foot in their store.

That still doesn't change the fact that you have two betta's in an undivided tank. You just don't do that, it's fine until one of the fish pays the price. That female is already extremely stressed, I don't think she could get much more clamped.

    This.

I had thought I'd read somewhere you had had the one male with the kribs for a while now, my mistake.

Good lord no! I didn't like having anyone in with the kribs, that's why they got their own tank. As I spend 8-10 hours with them daily I'll separate them, as setting up another tank is no problem, I have tanks, filters and heaters for 2 more tanks. And I have a divider for that 5gal as well if it's needed.

Well, Lupin died yesterday. :( I'm not home for a while, but I'll be adding another to take up his tank next month sometime, likely
