Hey everyone. New to the forums and excited about learning more about dog ownership. I am going to be straight forward, I have never owned a dog of my own before, but now have the opportunity as I am looking now for dog friendly housing to move to in the next month and whatnot. I also already know that I will be adopting a Beagle/Portuguese Podengo Pequeno from a good friend of mines father who runs a small farm.

We know it will be male and that he will be coming home to us in June 2012.

What I am really curious about are experiences with these breeds temperaments either separately or combined and what are some of the best training methods for once again either separately or mixed. I have read up that the Portuguese half is very trainable while the Beagle half can be more...distracted by scents and whatnot.

Thank you for advice ahead of time :) I look forward to information!

edit: OH here is a picture of the pups

Wow, that's going to be a reallyyy cute puppy! :) Do you know what color you're getting, or what you're going to name him?

Beagles are stubborn, but they're very smart and very food motivated! The best way, imho, with dogs like that (and any dog really) is to convince them that what you want them to do is the best, most rewarding, most exciting thing EVAR. Clickers are excellent tools for training any puppy! I highly recommend Puppy Primer by Patricia McConnell. I recently bought this book and love it. I'm getting a babyyy this summer too!!!
