Bathing a 14 week old Golden

I use a dog shampoo made with oatmeal. Any gentle dog shampoo, as far as I know works fine.
I recommend that you bathe her once or twice a week. Not a real bath with shampoo, but a practice bath, pretend. Teach her to jump in the tub for a treat and use a little warm water and pretend....just to get her use to it so she won't mind so much when she's older.
If she's dirty, she needs a bath, otherwise, I'd go as long as you can without. It keeps the oils in their coats there, which, if Goldens are like Labs, they need. When I had my Lab, I only bathed her when she rolled in a dead animal or smelled badly. A good brushing does wonders. My dogs now....just when they get stinky, every few months.

It's hard to bathe a big dog, isn't it Grammy. I never taught Lyric the trick of jumping in the tub so for a long time, I'd have to get his front feet up on the edge, the hoist his rear quarters in. He's heavy! Just in the past year or so, I started trying it. I'd say, "go jump" like in agility. LOL. Only the tub is NOT like an agility jump. LOL. But he'd try, even though he is not crazy about being bathed. He tried and tried...would put his front feet on the ledge and rock his body back and forth like he was trying but just couldn't quite make it. Finally he did get his front feet all the way in the tub, and one time....Viola! He leaped with the back legs too. He got a piece of beef jerky I think, that time. Now he does it every time, even though he looks kind of dejected and shaky while he's being bathed. Poor boy. He's such a good boy to give it the old college try. LOL.
So, Micro....start teaching your pup to jump in on cue, give him a good treat after. You can even feed him in the tub for a while to help accustom him to that big, white, scary thing. The more you do now, while he's young, the easier it will be later when he's big and heavy. I like summer best. Then I just use the hose outside. But only when it's really hot because that spring water I have is cold. Poor, abused dogs.

I must admit i buy horse shampoo by the gallon because of the size of my dogs.
But I tell my buyers to use just baby shampoo tearless and sometimes with a coupon you can get a better deal for tearless human shampoo than dogs.
Yet works the same.
My working pups leaving outside with the sheep do not get as many full bathes. Cause you strip the coat of essentials oils.
So you can OVER bath a dog too..
If their is any chance you may want the dog boarded or bath in the future at a salon or vet .
Should take the pup in for a Pet store bath so it can get used to being handled by others.
First pup bath at these shops are normally real Cheap like 14.00.

Victor and Mary get a bath twice a week because i am allergic. I use my shampoo and creme rinse. Every single person that comes in contact with Mary makes some comment about her beautiful coat. Her fur is glossy and in all these years we have never had a case of dandruff, fleas or skin problems. Victor is powder soft,and baby skin clean, no skin problems, and lovely touchable coat. For bathing a puppy i always put about two inches of water in the tubby first and throw in a few toys. THen i allow the water to trickle in not run full blast so it doesn't scare them. My dogs have always appriciated a tubby soak and Mary often asks for one when her joints ache.
