Just found out about this new sport and there's a "fun test" near me in October! I think Snipe, and maybe all 4 dogs, will be trying it out. I especially love that in heat females are allowed as long as they wear pants. :D

Anyone else here who has tried it?

That sounds awesome! Wish there was one closer to me, and not on a day I've already got major plans :p

Sounds like fun! I wish those had been around for my old terrier mix, Patch. She was an awesome ratter and mouser but too big to fit in earth dog tunnels.

ive tried it with both mine a few weeks ago, along with a bush hunt and lure coursing lol. Blaze actually did better then solo at sniffing out the ratties. they were not harmed, kept in small cages surrounded by larger cages. lots of fun. it was a JRT event any one could join

I will admit that I read the rules to make sure there were guidelines on rat care before I decided I liked the sport. ;)

ERMERGERD, Keeva would LOVE this. We have rats outside (live in the city) and she would just love "hunt" some.

And Corgis were traditionally used for vermin control as well.

Even though they are vermin. :D

Yes, I have done them a couple of times. They became an event at the JRTCA trials after I stopped going to those trials all the time. I entered Petie in it for kicks a couple of years ago when I was going to Nationals to judge another event. He had never done it before.......in the pouring rain, waiting for our turn and waiting in the line up outside of the barn Petie started to air scent and get excited. We entered and Petie indicated that the 'quarry' (lol) was on the right side. Judge asked me if I was ready? I asked if they were ready? Yep, dropped my dog and he flew forward and crashed into the cyclinder, cyclinder and dog disappear in between the straw bales. I yelled time. lol he won the National Championship for Barn Hunt in a wicked fast time.
It was fun, the dogs enjoy it, but we would rather got hunting to some serious quarry.

Cider and Mudge have played barn hunt, brush hunt, gtg, and racing with the JRT club. It's all super fun. While they hunt and kill wild mice and rats in the barn, the ones in events are domesticated rats club members keep. While unharmed, and most sleep through events they are so used to it.. Smudge says it's a carry out container... He's been known to try to toddle off with them.
