I really hoped it wouldn’t come to this but we had to finally rehome the guinea pigs. :( I’m pissed/sad that it didn’t work out, but I tried for a while to work it out, and it just didn’t work.

I guess it was my brother who started showing signs that he was allergic first. He got a really bad cough. If you’ve ever heard “croupâ€, that’s what his coughing sounded like.

Then my sister got a cough, not quite as bad, and a sore throat. My mom mentioned something about it being the guinea pigs, but I blew it off, and told her it was probably something they got from someone at church.

Then my mom started getting really bad burning pain in her eyes, and watering and itching, and one day she was actually crying cause one of her eyes hurt so bad, and she said she’d been waking up with them gooey/caked together.

Then I noticed that my throat had been hurting for a while, but I had been attributing it to lack of sleep. My mom kept blaming it on the guinea pigs, but it kept pissing me off, so she kind of stopped saying anything.

Then my sister and I went with my dad to Alabama to see a friend who’s dying of cancer, and we were gone for two nights. After two nights there, we felt LOADS better than we had, and had none of the symptoms we had before. So I started wondering if it could be the guinea pigs.

When I got home, my mom said her eyes felt better some, and my brother had been taking some medicine for his cough, and was doing better. So I was relieved, and thought maybe it wasn’t the guinea pigs after all.

Then I went to see them, and saw that there wasn’t any hay in their cage. I asked my mom if she’d given them hay while I was gone, and she said no, that she’d forgotten, she just gave them their pellets. So I was like “wtf†cause I’d asked her on the phone to give them hay, so I got the bag of hay out, and started giving them hay, and I noticed immediately that my hands/arms were itching/burning from the hay, so I went and washed my hands, but later throughout the day I noticed my throat was hurting again. And then my sister and mom started getting their symptoms back too, but my brother didn’t cause he was on antibiotics.

So I finally realized it was the hay. I had kind of figured as much, but didn’t really want to admit it cause I should’ve known after the chinchillas, but that was right when I had my sinus surgery and stuff for my deviated septum, and my chronic sinus infection, so I attributed all the allergy stuff to the sinus infection.

So yeah, I posted them on craigslist (I stated in the ad that I really wasn’t even sure I wanted to rehome them yet, unless I found the right home) and found a ridiculously sweet lady who was looking to get a pair of guinea pigs. She had a daughter who loved animals, and wanted to get her a small pet. She said she’d done research, and was aware that though she was getting the pigs for her daughter, that she would take responsibility for them. She said she would keep them for their whole lives, and was committed to caring for them, and we talked on the phone some, and I decided that she’d take really good care of them, so we met and talked for a while, and I met her daughter (who was flipping adorable) and gave them Peanut and Brownie. I cried when we left. =/ But I’m glad they got a good home.

It just sucks that we couldn’t keep them. I’m not gonna sit here and say that owning guinea pigs was like the best thing ever, cause it was a pita to clean up after them, and they were loud, and annoying, but I still loved them. I loved cuddling with them, and yelling at them when they would squeak randomly in the middle of the night. XD It was oddly, and kind of sadly quiet in my room last night. :(

But yeah, she said she’d send pictures (she was a huge animal lover and asked me to send pictures of Chloe to her cause she loved dachshunds XD) of them, so when she does, I’ll post them on here.

Anyway, it really sucks that I’m limited as to what pets I can have now because of allergies. I’ve always wondered how people who are allergic to dogs deal with it. Now I know that it really sucks. I love pigs, and chins, and rabbits, and pretty much all the animals that eat hay. =/

Not to be nit picky, but antibiotics aren't going to stop an allergic reaction.

I'm sorry that you went through that. When I had a bunny I was extremely allergic to certain kinds of hay. I couldn't give her alfalfa because just the smell of it would send me into an asthma attack. We changed her hay so many times because of me being allergic to it. I eventually discovered that if I bought bales of hay from local farmers there wasn't as much dust or smell to it and that worked out for us. Unfortunately she passed on, but once there was no more hay in the house I felt a lot healthier as you described.

I'm sure that they will be well loved.

Not sure if it was an antibiotic, just something he was taking. Hmm, well regardless he didn't experience any reaction.

Thanks! It was hard, but everyone's feeling healthier even my dad who didn't notice anything when they were here said his head feels clearer.
