Jess, he loves to swim and he loves to retrieve stuff out of the water. It would just be. Matter of getting him to actually jump off the dock, which we've never tried but I bet he would do it!

Is dock diving a sport you can do with a dog who isn't very dog social?
Definitely. At large, crowded events you just have to be more watchful, but it's totally doable.

They've have a 4ft leash rule and a no closer than 8ft line-up rule. These haven't been very enforced in the past, but I've heard this season they've really stepped up the game and are enforcing these rules at each event. Wohoo!

Excellent! I can't even crate him so he would be leashed at all times with me.

Maybe I'll take him to the next Alliston practice :)

Update!

So we took Obi to his first practice last night and we're hooked! It went way better than I anticipated! He was really composed around the other dogs (except one snarky incident when an intact male got too close) and he did pretty well jumping in too!

I really want to enter him this weekend for the sake of the unlimited practice, but I'm not sure what type of equipment/set up I can get away without having. The other people said that they usually set up popup canopy tents and have the dogs crated. I don't have a tent or a crate that's small enough to fit in my vehicle and yet big enough for him. Any ideas anyone??

You don't have a wire kennel that folds down? Xpen? You can always take apart a Vari kennel if that's what you have then put it back together when you get to the event.

Usually sporting goods stores (like Dick's, Academy, etc) have tents for around $50.

The other thing is, do you know the venue? Pavement? Grass? Shade trees? You could always just take a fold up chair and make use of a shade tree if it's on grass. :)

FWIW, the dock dog events around here, many people don't crate their dogs. If they have more than one, they do... but just one, they just keep them with them.

Of course, it all depends if you think he could handle it.

I have a wire crate but its huge. I'm not sure if the Large one I have will fit him but his is XXL I'm pretty sure. So I'm not sure if it folds up small enough.

I DO think I'll be able to borrow a pop up tent though.

Jess, that's good to know! Maybe I will just do that. If he needs a time out, I can pop him in the car with the AC on.

Yep but we could only go today since I can't tear myself away from my kid twice in one weekend.

At the end of our day, I wanted to photograph the other dogs doing their second wave. Obi was barking his fool head off because he wanted to be back in the pool! He loves it!

I'm bummed that its the end of the season here. Booooo Canadian climate!

And next year we are totalllyyyy getting membership and titles!

So glad you both enjoy it! And hey, you've got a youth handler in the making, right? :p

Unfortunately the season is winding down here, even in the south. Just not a ton of events. You might try looking for indoor events, though.

Just FYI, start looking to purchase membership in the December-ish time frame. Sometimes they do run specials with discounted membership if you purchase before a certain date. If I remember correctly, last year if you purchased membership the week the World Championship was going on (late November) you got it for $30, instead of the normal $50. :)

Awesome! I think the only indoor events here are Ottawa, which is a five hour drive. Boo!

As for membership, can someone explain how it works as far as dock dogs, dog dogs Canada and dock dogs Ontario? Do I need three separate memberships?

FWIW, especially since he has dog issues (...I think?) I'd be hesitant to take him to the expo. It is huge, and it gets CROWDED, and there's no way to really avoid dogs.
