Any guesses on what this "lab mix" really is?

Hi everyone,

I'm Jesse and my fiance and I have recently rescued a new puppy. We're trying to figure out what kind he is. We were told he was a black lab mix, but we're thinking black lab/black and tan coonhound.

We were also told that he is 3 months old.

Right now he weighs only 12 lbs. So I'm thinking, either he's a smaller dog mix, or younger than we were told.

Any ideas on his breed from the pictures?

Perhaps some Beagle. It is really hard to tell with puppies though, much easier once they've grown up.

Beagle perhaps, or any other hound type. His back legs make me think he's going to end up huge!

He does look hound-y. I think he might be black and tan coonhound? Or possibly even beagle/doberman mix? If you look at pictures of doberman puppies pre-ear docking, they do look similar.
He does look like a Catahoula Leopard dog too in terms of his shape. He's only 12 lbs at 3 months, so I don't think he's going to get huge (but I hope he does, I love big dogs).

We're in the northeast, but we got him from a rescue in Tennessee.

Thanks for the ideas! I can't wait to see what he looks like as he grows up!

not leopard dog (catahoula), american leopard cur they look & hunt houndy but with a cur handle to them. although some did get incorrectly registered w/ the NALC (it's where the more genial houndy acting & looking catahoulas come from) they are dramatically different breeds stemming from the same root source in a similar manner as the EBT & APBT.

I'm going to join the ranks and say beagle too. A beagle would also explain the 12lbs. My beagle boy weighed about the same at 12 weeks and is 27lbs at 2 years- and he could certainly loose a pound or two. He could be a pure cur, but he certainly looks like a beagle mix and they are a very popular mix.
