Yeah, I haven't run into any anti-rescue sentiment luckily and to be honest I haven't run into a lot of anti-breeder stuff either. But more times than not people get distracted by not knowing the breed or pretending to know the breed so they forget it's a dog from a breeder.

The only time I got flack was from a pharmacist I worked with who lectured me on spending money on a dog from a breeder when there are a ton in rescue. Funny thing was she had never had a dog, adopted or otherwise.

But I will say I roll my eyes and grit my teeth when I see things like what you posted floating around.

And pet peeve here: No, my rescue dog doesn't love me anymore than my breeder dogs. In fact she would be ok if I left her a pile of food and didn't come back for awhile. Traveler would die.

I guess it's another one that falls into the, why do you care when it isn't your life, your choice or your dog.

I've gotten flak for having a rescue dog I "imported" from a foreign country.... mostly from people who don't do a fraction of the rescue work I do. Just can't wrap my brain around that....

I have never encountered anti-rescue sentiment from anyone. Evah. lol

I did have some people in a class I was teaching gasp when I said Keeva was from a breeder. LOL. I chuckled.

In my area, the general sentiment is that the gright thing to do is rescue. People who do buy dogs from breeders are often kind of like, "Well, we know it was totally selfish but we just couldn't find any Shiba Inu puppies in rescue, so we're terrible people, we know." lol okay...

I... just really could care less at this point. You think I'm a bad person for buying a corgi? Ok. :) I think you're really dumb, then.

But yeah, I know it's kind of shocking to see that level of ignorance and hatred from somebody you thought was a friend.

The bad attitude goes both ways. Extremists/sour pusses will be that way no matter what.

People knock adopting from public shelters
    adopting from rescues
    buying from good breeders
    from bad breeders
    from pet stores

You could get a dog from the dalai lama rescued from the slums as a thank you for saving a burning orphanage and bringing peace to the world and people would STILL have a problem.

There are places on the internet where people ARGUE, rant and rave about which characters should be together on TV SHOWS.
People will always find something to complain about.

Just lead by example. Trash talking does nothing. Be happy with your dog and your choices and move on

People (either with no children or only "genetic" children) give my family flak for adopting children from other countries.
For some reason adopting a child from a horrible orphanage in the third world and giving him/her a loving home is wrong somehow.

Especially love it when people claim the "but there are so many homeless kids here!" card..and yet don't adopt or plan to adopt or do anything at all. Love the higher than thou attitude of people who do nothing but point fingers

I am glad I have not yet run into that mindset since both my current dogs are from good breeders. I would find it very upsetting. Watson's breeder has become a friend...

I have also had dogs that were rescues...Two of my spaniels were rescue dogs.

I think it is sad that people can take that stance...either side of it... :(

Same here... Most of the time people say, "oh you actually got her from Mexico? Well that's cool." But more than a dozen times already I've heard, "why would you rescue a dog from another country when there are so many here locally that need homes?"

On the flip side, I sadly know a lot of anti breeder people. :(

Yeah, I've never heard/seen any anti-rescue sentiment. A lot of really aggressive anti-breeder stuff, but nothing anti-rescue. Most of the time, I try not to even admit to strangers that I bred my dogs. I pretend my dogs aren't even related, because I'm afraid of getting hassled.

I'm not going to do a breakdown on how much I lost on breeding my dogs, but I can tell you it was a whole lot. It will be a while before I breed again, I can't afford it.

I've never met anyone who HATES on rescues. If anything.. I've encountered a handful of snobbery and those who dismiss rescue dogs but never anything resembling hate.
On the flip side, people who don't agree with breeders tend to be PASSIONATE about their cause and their hate for breeders.

Also, ALL responsible breeders I know support rescue.
Rescues that are ok with good breeders....I've never found one.

I've seen PLENTY of "Don't buy while shelter dogs die" shirts.
but no "Shelter dogs are a gamble, buy from great breeders" or similar ridiculous slogan.
I've also never heard of someone who adopted being told they killed another dog or were awful people.

The snobbery..it sucks. I've seen it happen first hand, I walk dogs of all kinds and have had people turn their noses up at the mixes the minute they hear they aren't purebred.
but in my experience, it doesn't compare to how people hate/vilify people who buy from breeders.

I pretty much want to 'like' everything you post.

I've never really had any rude comments about having rescued, quite the opposite really (the only weird/kind of rude thing I've ever had was a woman say 'he was a stray? He's had all his shots though, right?' .. but she wasn't a dog owner and I think she was just legitimately stupid). Seamus is great and I love him to bits, but I probably won't rescue again for a while. I used to be pretty involved in rescue and have met some 'characters' in my time. ;) I've known several hardcore 'rescue' people who think that breeders of any sort are responsible for all that is wrong with the world, and ANYONE who DARES BUY A DOG .. well, you might as well set schools on fire. They used to call breeders 'greeders' because ya know, responsible breeder was just an oxymoron. I was actually a member on a forum a LOOOOONG time ago and someone got flamed for posting pictures of 'their breeder bought Border Collie.' WTF.

I'm on a list for a breeder pup and at this point I couldn't care less what anyone thinks. I've come to the realisation that people will take issue with just about anything and I'm going to do what feels right to me. My dog, my business, who cares. If they can't share my happiness, well, that's too bad for them. :)

I will say, this one makes me really angry. I wish it didn't but it really does. It's just... unbelievable to me to behave as if the contributions people who also breed dogs make to rescue work don't count. Are you kidding me?

This is me over this statement:

I have rarely encountered other rescuers who don't proscribe to the "breeders are horrible" credo. I've known a few here and there, like one girl who had a whippet from show lines (although he has passed away now) and she also liked attending dog shows, and was rather intelligent and sane as rescuers go. A lot of them, though, eat up the ARist propaganda like it's candy. FOHA even had bumper stickers, manufactured by the HSUS, that said "My dog saves lives, he/she is NEUTERED/SPAYED." (there is one for males, and one for females) Messages like that don't differentiate between the good and bad in breeding. Just reproduction = bad! Very dangerous thinking.

Also, Miles is intact and I daresay his testicles aren't out murdering innocents or any such thing. Well, that I know of anyway....lol

Its definitely annoying when people can’t see anything but an absolute, black and white side. That picture about no such thing as a responsible breeder? Ugh... So simplistic... Makes me think the person doesn’t have very good reasoning skills or ability to think period...

The dog folks I hang around with IRL are pretty darned cool (or I wouldn’t hang with them lol). Among us we have a mix of pure bred breeder dogs, pure bred rescues, and rescued mutts. We think they’re all awesome :)

Now that I think about it, all of my friends who are breeders also have rescue dogs. Either of their breed or of another breed. One does a ton of fostering and transport for her breed rescue. Another fosters as well... Huh... hadn’t added that up.

I’ve not run across any anti-rescuing sentiment, but I have come across people who are less than impressed with the dog who is a rescue if that makes sense.

There is the anti mutt snobbery of course, but also the idea that any dog not raised from puppyhood isn’t going to be as good as ____. I’m not sure what goes in that blank, but you get the idea.

Its not that I get the feeling people are against rescuing, its more the idea that a rescue dog is “less thanâ€. So its more of a “oh that’s nice of you to lower yourself to get a rescue dogâ€. But honestly, those aren’t the folks I hang out with or who’s opinion holds any weight for me :)

Have definitely run into this. I photographed shelter dogs for 2yrs., so became friends with quite a few "hardcore" rescue people. When I *gasp* got Sako from a breeder, a lot of them were just shocked.
Mind you, they knew I got Wilson & Piper from BYB's (Wilson before I knew better, Piper because I couldn't leave her in the conditions she was in), never had any issues with that, go figure!

I usually get the people who are all "No one should be breeding!".. but then you come back with "..but, you realize there'd eventually be no dogs left, right?" and they get all huffy.

I have a couple "friends" still left on my FB who make it a point to comment on Wilson & Piper's pictures that I post, and completely ignore any of Sako's, as if he doesn't exist. It's actually the main reason I got out of photographing the shelter dogs.. I just couldn't deal with the mentality of a lot of the people anymore. It's unfortunate too.. but it is what it is.

I haven't heard much anti-rescue stuff. The only thing I sometimes hear is how nutty some rescues are with their qualifications to adopt. Or people who just aren't comfortable rescuing and would rather go with a breeder instead. Have never heard anyone say "Ew.. rescue dog??"
