We went to the local kill shelter yesterday, just to visit with all of the dogs and spend some time with them. I met this little girl there and absolutely couldn't leave without her. There was something about her that just pulled at me and I had to get her out of that place. She had been there 10 days already, she was an owner surrender. She didn't have much time left.

She weighs about 17-20 pounds (I need to get a better scale), not sure on her height... maybe 14 inches at the shoulders? I can measure her tonight. The shelter said she is 3 months old. They had her listed as a Collie mix.

Hmmmm! Border collie mix, maybe? The size seems about right for a BC. A little small for a rough/smooth collie.
She is CUTE!

Heck he looks like a purebred smooth collie at first glance, they are probably larger at that age but who knows. But maybe terrier of some sort in there.

I tend to agree with BC, but I can see why someone might think she has collie in her.

(Hey sheltie people, can a sheltie come in that color pattern?)

Actually, I see sheltie instead of collie in the face shape. I'd go with sheltie mix.

Whatever she is, she's awesome. I want her.

Thanks! Forgot to mention personality, that probably makes a difference. VERY VERY affectionate, constantly wanting to be touched and nearly always wanting to make eye contact with me. I'll catch her just laying there and staring at me. Very smart, playful, vocal (she "talks" to me when I talk to her), very alert and watches everything. A little shy/sensitive but I attribute that to her time at the shelter.

Yeah, I saw sheltie in the face too... but 20 pounds at three months old would be pretty darn big. At first I thought maybe JRT or some other kind of terrier mixed in to get the coat smoothed out? But it would have to be something larger to get the size right... that's why I was leaning towards BC... BC/sheltie is a possibility?
Definitely some kind of herding dog in there though, no mistaking that expression. Not sure I see anything else in particular, but when she ages some it might be more clear!

ETA: She "talks" to you when you talk to her? LOL... then I think sheltie mix is HIGHLY likely, LOL.

Yeah, the description of the personality and expression are definitely collie/sheltie. You can't miss that expression anywhere. And the vocalness sounds VERY sheltie. They can make up the weirdest noises.

I wouldn't rule it out based on size. Shelties are frequently as big as border collies. I think the biggest one I knew was 60 lbs... but I've known a lot that are 30-40 lbs. Those darn collie genes pop up all the time. I've been browsing the sheltie rescues a lot and I've found a lot of dogs there that were way oversized.

The reason I thought sheltie instead of collie was the stop and muzzle.

Shelties are often over sized. Shelby was, though packing a few extra pounds, a 38 pound dog. In her youth at a proper weight she was 31ish. She was a big girl. They mixed Collie blood in there at some point did they not? so on occassion you get some monster sized Shelties.

Looks like a tri-headed white smooth puppy to me. If not from a show line, you can get head qualities that will look "Sheltie-ish" when they're puppies. And sadly, there are quite a few BYBs out there who breed the whites and call them "rare". Cute pup - whatever she is! :)
