All the Terriers - need info

Just a heads up. I know of breeder that is placing a female Russell Terrier puppy because she has too much leg for the Russell Terrier. Spay/non breeding contract. If interested, let me know and I'll pm her contact info to you.

I would for sure say Border Terrier.

You're pretty much describing Jackson in your post, he's been really fantastic as far as trying anything. He's even getting into frisbee and his drive for them has constantly amazed me. He will never be a BC but he tries his darn hardest. He will walk for miles and loves to go on hikes, and any adventure you throw at him. He's a big swimmer. He's really a fantastic little dog with quite a bit of drive. I love his enthusiasm to work for me.

I was going to suggest looking into Silky's, but the reason I sway towards BT's is because of your other dogs. I don't think Jackson would do well in an environment with lots of other larger breeds and would think most other Silky's wouldn't either. Well, let me rewind, he's totally fine with big dogs so long as they're not the 'stomping' really rough type. He really doesn't put up with being pawed at, or rammed into, even if by accident. My uncles GSD isn't his favorite dog on the planet (at least indoors, it's just too small of a space). Jackson is completely non reactive and will get along with any dog unless it hurts him (by playing too hard, etc), and he's gotten testier with age and less tolerant of rude behavior from other dogs. My uncles GSD greets us with a big pounce most of the time and Jackson has no fear in telling her off. But he got on great with a Rottie we watched for a week, he knew him from the time the Rottie was a puppy though, and the Rott was great with how he played with him (he would usually stand up while Jackson was on the couch, so they were the same level, and they would do little bitey games, and Jackson would paw at his face, etc).

But the Borders seem to be a great all around dog really. It's why I love them so much and will have one someday. I really really love my boy and greatly contemplating a Silky as a second dog (because I think they're highly under-rated in the terrier/toy dog world, so I always like to throw the suggestion out there, especially if one loves yorkies, but maybe wants a bit 'more' in personality and sturdiness - also you can get one from a good breeder for under $1000) but I think the Border fills in the little gaps that I would love in a temperament that the Silky just doesn't quite have. But then again, I kind of like the more 'sharpness' in the Silky that the Border doesn't seem to have, lol.

I think you guys would be very happy with a BT.

Btw, most BT breeders I spoke to dogs were no less than $1200. Usually in the $1200-$1600 range.

I've grown to appreciate yorkies more (even though I have one, technically lol).. but a lot of the dogs I met I just... didn't like. But a lot of the byb/rescue types are really fantastic dogs.

Ah, no fair! Nope, not ready! I just got a message about a breeder that's holding back her ACD performance prospect too. BUT, I'm still all up in the air about which dog I want so the time isn't right yet! I am waiting until next year...both to make up my mind and because I am hoping to have titles on Kastle, Robin, and perhaps have Aikon's BH before the new addition (aka everyone is well on their way to their sporting futures)

Wow! thanks for all the info/insight! Anything under $1500 I feel is a fair price for a nice dog from pedigreed lines. Much over that and I'm thinking it's not for me.

Not much help, but a friend has what we are fairly certain is a border terrier x JRT (could be something like border x fox terrier or have some chihuahua thrown in, but most likely 50/50 border x jack). This dog is AMAZING. I actually feel sad that she's not my dog when I'm around her.

My friend got her as a Craigslist rehome, before that she came from ACC. I don't know if anyone could have predicted how perfect she'd be from a shelter profile, but it might be worth looking around.

MOA,the smooth,black/white or tri ones!.
Great hunting dog!.
Very common,in my next of the woods.
Can be gender aggressive like most terriers.
Super playful and can be very drivey,depending on lines.

A good border terrier will have a perfect balance of on like a Malinois and off like a pit bull. They're dog friendly, human friendly, driven, and active. They are carry sized but not yappy. They're very smart but they can be hard to redirect when they have that terrier focus. They're supposedly cat friendly if raised carefully but all terriers should have exceedingly high prey drive, the kind that says who cares that your leg is broken, go go go. I love the breed and I plan to have one some day.

Jacks are very similar in many regards but from what I see they're even more over the top in energy, drive, and crazy. I think of them as Backup style Malinois where the border terrier is Sloan. When I posted a very similar thread (maybe we can find it?) I was reminded that JRT, dog tolerant but not labs per say, don't always have patience for what they consider annoying behavior, my Malinois are very annoying sometimes and it's something to be aware of.

For an all around HAPPY dog who'll love other dogs you may consider a wheaten. A well bred wheaten is a jack of all trades, literally because the Irish farmers needed them to do everything, and they should be comical and happy dogs. My groomers at work sigh and roll their eyes at wheaten a because is so annoying grooming a dog that is always so happy, the dog just wants to love on them and won't hold still for clipping. Also, they're energizer bunnies but they have an in-home off switch. My wheaten could out run/swim my game dog pit bull and hunt bred rat terrier some days. The cons are because of this joy, it's rather lab like, they can be hard to focus and find a higher value reward than ZOMG peoples & puppies! lol Mine was hard as heck to motivate by food and play but I've trained several since that renewed my faith in their drives. They're also notoriously good at being animal friendly when taught but retaining pest control ability (another trade of a farm dog, when well bred).

My Deckers rat terriers were amazing dogs. Tons of energy, stamina, amazing biddability, and a fantastic off switch. I have met a lot of undesirable dogs in show or pet bred but you can almost always pick out a hunting rat amongst the crowd. They're quiet, calm, and confident. At home they're silly, reserved with strangers (plenty of real guarding potential, Hannah was a monster if she read a threat), but controlled and it shouldn't be a fear driven awareness. They're very smart and attached but confident and shouldn't be neurotic about separation. My girls had death fights and I had to return one to the breeder but both were awesome(Hannah still doesn't like females but she tolerates them) with other dogs outside of each other. Again, pack terriers so they shouldn't have unmanageable aggression. Hannah was a fluke of health issues which lead to some behavioral issues and that's why she's with my mom now but generally speaking they're a healthy breed.

Have you considered a small GSP, vizsla, or Brittany?

The wheatens look awesome! I've never really given them a second look as a breed before, but I loves me some super happy dogs!

I have 2 JRTs living with 2 Giant Schnauzers and 3 cats. They are crazy, high drive, and always on the go. BUT they do like to cuddle up on the couch, are ok with the cats(supervised of course!!), and are pretty cool little dogs. I was a Giant Schnauzer person through and through until I started playing Flyball and fell in love with the JRT.
