1 year old female Basset hound has progressively become more nervous and has fairly bad seperation anxiety.

Bella is at the point where if my wife and I leave her at all she begins to whine, and whimper. Typically when it is raining or cooler out we take her to the garage when we leave for work. She cries and will not eat food if left out for her. In fact she does not eat at all unless someone is around her. If she is left outside in her pen, same thing.

When we put her in her crate she will whine or cry whether we are leaving for a few hours, or going to sleep for the night. This has only been in the last 3 months or so. We have been crate-ing her less and less, so is it partially that she has become less familiar and comfortable in her crate? Also it is not in the same room we are but it hasn't been for the past 8 months.

Probably a seperate issue, but she is very tentative and scared at the dog park. Another dog (spaniel mix) was trying to play with her, and she started barking at the dog, whimpering and backed away from it. I simply stayed away from the dog for the rest of the time there.

Also in general she seems to be startled and scared easily. Is there any way to calm her down at all, or do I just have a very anxious dog?

You stated in the first sentence that your dog has "fairly bad separation anxiety." What makes you say that? Has she been diagnosed by a trainer/behaviorist? Or is it just the recent crate problems in the last 3 months that make you say that?

It sounds like basically she needs her confidence built up. Have you done any clicker training? Agility or other dog sports? These tend to help build confidence by teaching a dog that trying new things gets them rewards.
