8 1/2 wk rottie nipping and growling, chewing/mouthing

I have a 8 1/2 week old rottie that gets quite upset when he is picked up. We try not to pick him up often because, after all, he's a big dog and should be able to walk himself. But certain situation come up where we need to carry him. Sometimes (usually in public) he's fine, but other times...

    House breaking troubles.

If she's really that bad, then I would probably suggest not letting her roam in the house at all. Keep her in her crate (ignoring her crying is hard but you have to) all the time, and when you take her out she is only allowed outside, and no playing until she goes. Then when you are finished...

    Pulling puppy...

You can also change directions. If she goes ahead of you and start pulling quickly turn and walk the other way. She will get a nice yank of the leash and realize she needs to go where you go. If you do this enough, she should start focusing more attention on you so she knows where you are...

New member of the family!! Rottie!! [pics]

I can't really agree with anything you said there. All good words. I know it's no excuse, but I really tried being patient. This is our second dog, of I'm sure many more in the future. With more knowledge in hand now, I will definitely be even more careful next time around. Regardless, we...

    Crate help??

I think that would help, also try feeding her in the crate, randomly hide treats in there for her to find,, keep her toys in there so she has to go in to get them, and most importantly NEVER let her out of her crate while she is crying.

Yes I agree with everything you said. I kind of already knew this going into it as well, but for some reason I decided to just go with it. We've had so much trouble finding Rottweiler breeders with puppies available for 'companion homes' to begin with, let alone being selected to receive a...

    House breaking troubles.

Yeah, if you are petting her and giving her treats while she is in the crate crying, you are probably just re-enforcing that habit. "If I'm in my crate and cry, I get treats". As far as bathroom breaks, after puppies have a play session, after sleeping, and within 30 minutes after...

    House breaking troubles.

I'm no professional, but I think you are doing the crate thing a little wrong. Holding her in her crate with your hands while she struggle to get out is probably a bad idea. It will make her thing of the crate as a bad place. Instead, throughout the day toss some treats in there, some toys...

What People Say About Dogs/Your Breed

Haha nice thread...I'll share a few: Boss - Chihuahua (1 yr 4mo old) - Wow look at him run! (he is extremely fast) - What do you feed that thing?!? - "What is he?" -"Chihuahua" -"...and...?" - "Is Boss the BOSS!?" Romeo - Rottweiler (8 weeks) - Is that a Newfoundland? (lol) - You...

    Started clicker training!

Yeah, we are definitely a picture family so that's good. Before we got the clicked we used 'good-boy!' and everytime he'd hear that he'd come running for a treat. So I think that made it easier to transition to the clicker. Somehow the clicker just seems to work so much better though, and...

New member of the family!! Rottie!! [pics]

Thanks, good info. We got him from a breeder a couple hours away. Some may call her a back-yard breeder though because she advertised in the local newspaper, she usually keeps the dogs in indoor/outdoor kennels (the ones with in indoor part and an outside dog run) rather than in the house...

New member of the family!! Rottie!! [pics]

That's great to hear from a fellow rottie owner (not that I'd love him less if he was long-haired). I started him on clicker training and he is catching on quite well. These are very smart dogs.

    Started clicker training!

We just got a new pup (http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56471) so I decided I wanted to try clicker training. Last night we picked one up from the pet supply store and I started working it. I only loaded/charged it for a short period of time. He (Romeo) seemed to catch on...

New member of the family!! Rottie!! [pics]

Last Friday we picked up the newest member of our family, a baby rottie. He was born April 26th in a litter of 3 boys and 3 girls. He call him Romeo. He is a very smart boy, although quite stubborn. Loves to chew feet, cords, and anything else that gets in the way of his mouth. He often...
