    The "holistic dog" movement

I give puppy shots at 12-16 weeks, and give immune support for a bit before and after. We feed decent grain free kibble with some raw a few times a week, mostly for the dental benefits. We have titers run on the adults yearly, and if they are low on a certain antibody we vaccinate for that only...

    My confidence is gaining again!

Before we got Tank (blind) and Olive (deaf, some blindness starting at around a foot from her face) I was a reasonably confident trainer. Maddie has came to me a 9 month old bucket of overflowing energy and no prior training, and we eorked through it. Moose was doing off leash rally exercises at...

    Contacting Dog's Past Home?

As someone who just got an update from Maddies home (it's been over a year now since I've rehomed her) I'd say yes, send an update. I get an email every couple of months, usually just a quick "We love her/she's doing awesome/we still are spoiling the crap out of her" and a picture, but like...

Chaz Moms and Moms-to-Be Chat (everyone welcome)

Just found this thread :) I'm a step momma to two amazing kids! Kyler is 3, going to be four in November. He will start preschool here soon, which we are very excited for. He knows his colors, numbers though about 15 or so and half his letters. He is alllll boy, loves to roughhouse and climb...

Ok, Its time I share the news!

Flyball, agility, disc, dock diving, obedience type sports, depending on what they dog enjoys. I just want something active with a decent off switch for inside (when properly exercised of course)

Ok, Its time I share the news!

Lol true that! But this is the same woman who doesn't like Beezers... Don't ask how we manage to stay together :P I'm sorry to hear that :( we will definitely look for one who has been in a foster home and exposed to kidlets. If we can't find a place that allows pits we've talked about a...

Ok, Its time I share the news!

Yup. A visual deterrent is all we want. We plan on trying to find a fairly young pup to socialize the crap out of it. Our dogs go pretty much everywhere with us that they can, so human friendly is essential. Just has to look tough, which is why a pit would make such a good fit

Ok, Its time I share the news!

And it's less of a chore to get my wife to agree LOL. She loves pits and grew up with them, and wants another badly. She wasn't keen on the idea of a shaggy coated dog :P

Ok, Its time I share the news!

Thanks. I would really like a super high drive sport dog, and we do plan on getting a Mal eventually, though it probably won't be at least until our youngest (who is 3) is in middle or high school. To be honest I don't know that much about the brt, except they were bred by the Russians as...

Ok, Its time I share the news!

Yeah, honestly I think that a pit will fit our lifestyle better right now anyways, since we have a preschooler. Tons of pit pups come through the shelter system around here, so it won't be too hard to find one that fits in :)

A collage with pups and both parents Adult from litter #1 Gah... why do you guys always have to be right about things?! LOL I mean, I'm glad you guys are here to see things without the rose colored puppy vision, but I'm still disappointed. The past two days the breeder has been a bit...

Ok, Its time I share the news!

I am aware. She breeds work mixes, no different than people breeding curs to pit bulls for hogging. I've talked to an owner of a pup from litter number 1. She has nothing but good things to say about her pup, and I'm actually going to meet them next Saturday. This will be litter number 3...

Ok, Its time I share the news!

Thanks! :) The first litter was an oops. But the puppies are in sport or service homes and doing wonderfully. The parents are health tested so they have decided to have another litter of the same cross before getting her fixed. I've wanted one since I saw a pup from the oops litter, but since...

Ok, Its time I share the news!

So while I haven't posted a thread about it, I've not exactly been secretive :P Mostly because I'm super duper excited and secrets aren't my strong suit LOL BUT If all goes as planned, in July/August of next year, we will be adding dog number 3 to the family! :D A Black Russian Terrier x...

    Question for groomers, advice welcome!

Can you explain blade numbers to me? The set we have right now just has guards like a human set would lol

    Question for groomers, advice welcome!

Ok so I seem to be the resident dog groomer in my family lol. Up until recently it was just bathing and nails, but now 2 different family members have gotten long haired dogs, it now includes shaving. Being something I've never done (but I've been winging it for the past few months lol) I have a...

    Beginning Schutzhund?

What do you consider foundation training? I've read that Black Russian Terriers mature slower (mentally) than other breeds used for the sport, so should I take it extra slow? The pup is half BRT half Mal, not sure if that makes any difference or not though :P ETA: With past pups I usually...

    Beginning Schutzhund?

Yes, they are :) We would probably do schutzhund as it seems more structured, but I'd like info on both just in case. Sorry that wasn't very clear in my op :) There is only one club that I know of in my immediate area, and I refuse to go to them. But I will definitely keep a look out for others...

    Future Puppy Questions

Maybe my dogs are just weird, or maybe its because of their disabilities (one is mostly blind, the other is deaf and has some sight loss), but whenever we meet dogs outside of our house one is fearful and the other has a tendency to get aggressive. This is both off or on leash, and especially so...
