    Boerboel vs Fila

Firstly thankyou for your kind words. It is true i have 2 large dogs of guarding breeds, however, their protective instincts are not anywhere near as strong as those of a Boerboel (or what i have read about them). I think my real experience of strong charactered dogs is my parents Maremma...

    Boerboel vs Fila

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have an idea of how the temprement of a Boerboel compares to that of a Fila. These are both breeds i am very interested in for the future, but as a Fila is banned here so the Boerboel is the only choice out of the two. e.g reaction to strangers, aggressive...

    my big dog

How about a Boerboel? Very large and intimidating, very powerful, very protective, are decribed as being good at judging situations. They also are one of the less dog aggressive mastiff breeds. They are intelligent and trainable but need a strong (mentally and physically) owner with experience...

    Rotti Question..

The breed standard for a rotti male is up to 110lbs or around 50kgs. Many of the huge rotties you see will have a larger mastiff breed somewhere in their breeding. Also, what breed is Max??

Is it cruel to hunt with dogs?

Yes well many dogs were bred for dog fighting and gladiatorial fights against lions etc. Does that mean that is acceptable?

Are there any signs to tell what size of dog a puppy will be?

That weight chart isnt really very accurate, especially for large and giant breeds. It really does very frm breed to breed and even from dog to dog. Tigger was around 45lbs at 4 months and is already 95lbs at 8 months. English Mastiffs for example, can take 4 years to stop growing! He is so...

Is it fair to judge a dog's temperament.....

I hate it when vets have no idea what they are talking about. A lot of them dont understand breed personalities, behavior and history. It also irritates me when a vet suggests neutering as a cure for pretty much any behavioural issue. Not every dog is going to accept being proded by a stranger...

    breeds

I have a rottie/staffy cross pup. He is 8 months old. He is great! He likes cuddles and is already quite a good watchdog. He is, however, very strong for his size. He is not very tall but already weighs over 80lbs and this is something to remember when training him not to pull on the lead! He is...

    Question About Size/Age Ratio

Hi. Tosas can vary in adult size as there are different weight catagories. Some adult males are over 200lbs. I have a 5 month old English Mastiff/Dogue de Bordeaux mix and he weighs about 72lbs and he looks a bit skinny! I predict (from having read alot about predicted adult weights) he will end...

    Mixing in with dry kibble.

I have a 5 month old English Mastiff/Dogue de Bordeaux cross pup who weighs about 72lbs and he is on high quality dry kibble, however the instructions recommend 1.6-2lbs of kibble per day and he never eats anywhere near that much. I need to mix something in with the food to get him to eat it...

    neutering

One thing in particular that seems especially strange is neutering a very young pup as removing their testicles means they cannot go through puberty.

    neutering

No really i am not trying to throw around vocabulary because it is vastly vastly more complicated than anything i said. I made an effort to not sound like i was just trying to use medical terms and i apologise if it seemed that way to you. However the endocrinology (hormonal system) of a dog is...

Its not supposed to impress you it is to show that i have knowledge of mammalian endocrinology which is what this is all about.

    neutering

I am a medical student and having studied the effects of hormones on the human body (and assuming they are similar in dogs which i am sure they are) you cannot just remove a hormone from an animal's body and that is all that is affected. Many different hormones affect each other. For example the...

    neutering

Castrating males and secondary sex characteristics: Development of male urogenital structures such as the penis and prepuce are dependent on the male sex hormone, testosterone, or its metabolites. Males castrated at birth or at four-and-a-half months, for example, are unable to achieve a tie...
