    How can I stop this?

Yes Americans are getting a bit warped...the dog or cat is now the new "child"...even have air conditioned houses, and what not....it's a big business here. We LOVE to pamper our pets....(I am warped myself...however, my dh will not let me go overboard). I don't think it is bad to keep...

    How can I stop this?

My dh is like you...no dogs in the house, etc. To solve the problem, just pay plenty of attention to the dog on a schedule if you can. He can also have boundaries set. Dogs need boundaries, just like children or anybody else. If your climate permits, no reason he should be cooped up in...

What is the best age to spay?

When is it best to spay a female dog? I understand if you spay at the wrong age they will be incontinent at an older age. I come across this a lot with female dog clients. I am just curious...what is the best time to spay?

My dogs sometimes run on three legs

I would try doggie boots if he will wear them. His foot pads are probably very sensitive to the cold. Also check for chafing, etc.

    Help! Westie's training is regressing

I am helping a client with her Westie, Stanley. Stanley is an 11 month old Westie who is regressing in his training. Here are a list of the problems: 1. He went to the bathroom (pooped and peed) in the house a few times. He also refuses to go when taken outside. I suggested they keep him...

    Abused Training Tools

I agree the methods are good methods IF used properly and by experienced people. For everyday people and their dogs, I would reduce the technicalities as much as possible. The idea is not to confuse the dog but to have the dog focused on his training. There is a great e collar yahoo group...

House trained but LOT's of pooping

I would definately monitor his eating schedule and crate him and take him out for potty breaks if possible. As suggested I would change the food.

    Volhard method

Yes I am very familiar with this site. I also trained my dogs through one trainer here in the Houston area. I thought the method worked real well. I just wonder if others have used it.

    Volhard method

Any of you familiar with the Wendy Volhard method of training? If so, what do you feel about it? I may be going to a seminar in April. This method is pretty concise and works well but has many corrections. It is often used to train dogs up to Utility obedience level and show dogs.

    Dog Outdoors

I would find another room mate as someone already suggested. Your standard of taking care of your pet should be accepted. If you get a spouse though, I would definately consider this first....in other words, you must respect your spouse's feelings and please discuss pets (and children) before...

    Pet Insurance

Pet Care Insurance or Veterinary Pet Insurance. They both have websites but I am not sure of the domain name. Just search for it or type in the name and it should come up.

    Pet Insurance

I have pet insurance and I find that it does help. A good reason to have pet insurance is: 1. good records 2. helps recover many expenses for expensive health needs 3. It can cover check ups if you get the right coverage 4. It is relatively inexpensive and with one claim can...

    Family v. Dogs

My dh does not care much for animals because you actually have to care for them.... We have had several arguements over my dogs...and any other pet I hope to have. Anyway, I insist on keeping the dogs anyway...and any other pet I get.

    Intro

I am a petsitter and have been into dogs for years. I also love cats and owned several of them over the years. I also have a cockatiel and two finches. I have always had a passion for animals. I started out my love for animals wanting to go to vet school. I opted to stay out of vet...

    Mastiff always grabbing leash

Hello Whitewitchone....great to see you too? Is the forum still active? I have lost the link to it. I am trying these things suggested and it does help. He is at a stage where he wants to test boundaries. I try a combination of things to keep him under control. If I let him off leash...

Dogs I would use specialist before having the breed

Oh, I just have met people with Weimerangers that are stubborn and they have a hard time coping with them.... I certainly do not consider them as formidable as the other breeds we must be careful with, but my girlfriend had one growing up that was a real trip. This dog (a female) was...

    Dog training certification/classes

I am interested in professional dog training. Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to get started with my education? I understand there is no real certification, however, I am interested in training housepets mostly. I am also interested in venturing in advanced training and possibly...

Dogs I would use specialist before having the breed

I just want to give my opinion on training issues with certain dogs. Since many people have issues with dogs, I would try to find specialists for certain breeds. Chow German Shepherd Rottweiller Pit Bull Mastiff Some terriers: Ie. Weimeranger I am sure there are...

    Kicked out of Puppy Class

I saw a dog "hanging" at a Schutzhund training one time....I was mortified. Chows are a challenge but they can be motivated. You should get with someone that specializes just with this breed. They are wonderful once they are trained nicely.....they are worth the effort too.:p
