Thanks for the link:). If purina wants to give me free stuff when all I do is tell everyone how crappy their food is then, hey , I'll take it lol. The "M" tag will be perfect for our Miya:D

    Any Akita Owners Here???

Just wanted to offer some more helpfull insight - here's a link to breed specific forum I belong to (it's for all Japanese breeds, but Akitas are popular and alot of the people on there have been raising or breeding Akitas for years and really know their stuff): A Japanese dog forum community...

    Any Akita Owners Here???

I've never had ours to a groomer, so I'm not positive how she'd be witha stranger away from my or my husband, I'm imagine fine though, other than nervous. I actually taught her (and my other 2 dogs and even 2 cats) to allow me to cut her nails completely by myself. I just ask her to "down" and...

    Any Akita Owners Here???

My old boss's Akita was not great with strangers, he had to warm up to people and sometimes decided he didn't like certain ones ;). Miya on the other hand, LOVES people. We socalized the heck out of her though, between puppy classes, pet stores, parks, camp grounds, friends and relatives...

    Any Akita Owners Here???

:) lol a bit more investigation and discussion and we actually have similar views, not necessarily opposing ones ;) in retrospect, I suppose "alpha" wasn't the best trem to use in my original post - what I mean is just as we've been discussing - being a "leader" and a strong one, i didn't mean...

    Any Akita Owners Here???

I agree, there are times when taking a dominance theory training style is more appropriate and other times when positive reinforcement is better. I personaly use a combination of both (I don't eat before my pets (I do make them sit before I'll give the food though), I tend to their needs first...

    Cat kibble - which one?

I recently switched my two to NV Instinct from Verus and they're doing geat. Both have lost a bit of extra weight and I do notice less shedding. Out of those three you mentioned, I'd personally go with the Orijen.

    Which First?

 I used to feed Innova and loved it, but now they got bought out by Proctor and Gamble:yikes:, so I'll never use it again. My dogs and cats do very well on Nature's Variety Instict (grain-free) in combination with the raw. My newest addition is a Yorkie puppy and she came from...

    Any Akita Owners Here???

Well, some will say yes, but honestly, I've been around both and the only difference I could tell aside from just basic differences you see between different dogs of the same breed, is the Akita Inus(Japanese) can be a bit more "intense", but then again I wouldn't necessarily say that's always...

    Any Akita Owners Here???

Well, to each his own with training methods, I'm not basing what I said or do on a "tv personality", it's based on lots of experience and research and observation. Why do you say it's a "myth"? You have proof of this I asume? Geeze, I'm new to this forum, but definatly not new to working with...

    Any Akita Owners Here???

I have an Akita :) I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Akita, she's the perfect dog for me :) (well, technically she's supposed to be my husband's dog, but she loves me more and I'm the only who cares for her;)) The vet I used to work for owned 3 that came to the clinic with him every day. They were the first...

    Recommend A Breed

We have an Akita and she fits into pretty much everything you described.:) They're great with children that they know as long as they're around them from from the begining and most are fine with any child as long as they're used to them - cats, well, she's fine with ours but we bad to train her...

Looking for a breed. Suggest one?

To me, you just basicaly described a Golden Retriever. Loyal, energetic, fluffy coat, somewhat large, easy to train etc. I honestly think that for anyone who's never owned a large breed dog before, a Golden is great place to start. (plus, they're eay to find;))

    Please help my chow chow

Did they test his thyroid? That would have been a specific blood test not part of a regular pannel and alot of vets will send it out to a lab for a complete thyroid panel. Others will just to a basic T4 in-house to get an idea. Also could be allergies (food or environmental).

    Eye Issue - pics too.

Hi, I'm new but I worked as a vet tech. Conjunctivitis is just basically a generic term meaning there's swelling and reddness to the eye area. I'd doubt it's allergies and only effecting one eye, especially if there's no other symptoms. Most likely - he probably just got something in there that...

Help! New dog chases my cat!

From my own experience, if the cat runs away, the dog will chase, if the cat is layed back or stands up to the dog, the dog isn't as interested in chasing it. We have two cats here with our 3 dogs (all indoors). One of the cats couldn't care less if one of the dogs comes after him - he stands...

What time do your furry alarm clocks go off...

I had it made when it was just my beagle Darla - she'll sleep as long as I did...BUT Miya our Akita wants out by 8:00 and our newest addition, Alice, wakes me up at 7:30. My other little alram clock is my cat Chooch - he will smack my face with his paw to wake me up even on the rare occassions...
