    Housetraining Troubles with Rescue

Yup - we've been checked by the vet and nothing is wrong. He also doesn't warn outside. Just happens. Wierdest thing I've ever seen. Most dogs seem to do a "dance" of some sort. *sigh* I've changed my routine so that they eat and then immediately go for a walk. I used to wait while I...

    Any Doberman Pinscher owners here?

Hi! I agree with what others have posted about carefully looking into breeders and making sure that you're getting a healthy puppy. There are so many genetic diseases with this breed. About the books, if you only buy one, buy Culture Clash. It's probably one of the best books I have ever...

    Housetraining Troubles with Rescue

Thanks! I'm glad it's not only me. I wish he would sniff or circle. It would be easier to catch him. For now he's in view at all times....

    Housetraining Troubles with Rescue

Hello All! I've adopted a 9 month old Doberman Pinscher. We've had him about 4 weeks and he's settling in really well, however, I'm having some trouble with housetraining. We use a crate and he's has never peed in the house. He seems to understand that that's not allowed. However, we've...

Locking Dog In Crate when away

My mom's beagle has some confinement issues. She tried crating him and he just shredded the plastic liner ( and you know how heavy those are ). He was shut in the laundry room for a while until she figured that he could handle being out. They don't work for everyone.

    Lost and Found websites

Our rabies tags (in Canada) have a website you can log on to, enter the # on the tag and (if the owner has entered the dogs information) you can pull up a picture, address and phone number. There's no way to get personal contact information without the tag #. http://www.getmehome.ca

    Dog Litter?

They were advertising it at the Detroit Kennel Club show over the weekend ... Free tote bags with a dog sitting in a "litter box". It was the strangest thing I'd ever seen. It looks like Yesterday's News or a comparable recycled newspaper product. I guess it makes sense if you don't have...

    Older Rescues and obedience?

Do you find it's significantly more work to have two than one? Everything I've read says to spend time with each individually. Does this mean 2 separate walks - or can we walk together in the morning and then have separate time in the evenings? Thanks so much!

    dog wont come

One of the things with recalls is that you have to work on them consistently. The basic premise behind recalls is that the dog has to understand that he should come when called because something good will happen and because he'll probably regain the freedom after coming, but also he has to...

    Boxer

On the Beagle front ... My sister adopted a beagle from the shelter last May. He ran every chance he got and they spent hours every week looking for him all over town. (With three young children it was impossible to constantly monitor all exits.) My mom took him over last summer and he's a...

    Older Rescues and obedience?

Renee, Thanks so much!! We won't be getting a puppy. (That was enough fun the first time around! *smile*) The youngest they have is 10 months. They have a couple 4-5 year olds that sound really good - I was just worried that it may be tough to train them. Thanks for replying!

    Older Rescues and obedience?

Hello!! We've been approved for a rescued dobe and I'm wondering if anyone has any insight they can offer about older dogs and obedience training? I'm currently competing Rally with my rescued lab - but he was a puppy when we got him. I would like to get into CKC Trials eventually. I'm...

house/crate training trouble in older puppy

One thing we tried, and I know it works for some people, is a bell. Tie a bell around the doornob. When you're going out for potty, ring the bell then go out. Some dogs will pick up that if they ring the bell - they go outside. Just a thought.

Another Crate question from another Newbie.

She will probably cry more if you make a big deal about her before you leave. Have playtime a little before you leave and then leave without making a big fuss. I agree with the frozen bones. I also soaked rope toys in low sodium chicken broth and froze them. Good for teething and for...

    Hello!

Hi! I have a lab-x (we think Dane) who is just over a year. He was a horrendous puppy and is finally slowing down and turning into the dog I'd hoped for. *smile* We have our first Rally-O competition at the end of the month and I'm hoping to get into agility (if I can find a trainer in...

    Opinions about Schutzhund

I'm sorry to ask a sort of off-topic question, but I've been looking for answers and haven't been able to find anything: Can any dog do Schutzhund or is it only available to specific breeds? Thanks so much!

Will she ever outgrow this? Excitement peeing

We had a Basset Hound that would pee whenever we came home or if someone came over. We did change our routine so that she came outside to say "Hello!". She didn't grow out of it. I have heard that ignoring them when you first come in will help. Come in, take off your coat & shoes, make a...

    Crating at night

We got Wes when he was 11 weeks. I got up every four hours for the first two weeks then I started moving it back by one hour per week. So after 5 weeks we were up to 7 hours. It's hard - but I just set my alarm, picked up the puppy, went for a pee, came back in and went back to bed. I...
